My name is Jayden, my uni is USQ.
My parents didn’t go to university, so I was sort of the first one to go to university in the family. My parents always encouraged me to do my best and work my way to university, because they wanted to see me get the best career I could. They are enjoying seeing me learn new things and enjoy university, and want to see me get a great job at the end.
I always wanted to study at university but I went through several changes of mind – I was thinking about teaching and then I went to business, and at one point there I was thinking of going to the Police Force. Because I couldn’t join the Police Force until later, until 21, I thought I would study something to fall back on. I did Maths B and C at school, so I really had an interest in figures and sort of liked the idea of accounting.
This is my second year. I moved from Mackay last year when my dad had a transfer. It’s a quiet atmosphere, there’s lots to do: the beach, you’ve got shopping, you’ve got sports. It’s not a large university, it’s a small university, so less students. We have these groups to organise events to help them so that university is not just a place to come and study and that’s it, but to get people more involved. Every student has the opportunity to get involved since it’s such a small campus.
Most of the staff here are very easy, just with calling them and just a simple meet-up time.
Lecturer: This is called consultation time. If the student is not able to understand or grasp the knowledge that I taught in tutorials or lectures, this is the time for them to have the opportunity to learn what they don’t understand inside the class and at home.
Jayden: It definitely adds to the advantage of USQ because it is just so easy to get the help and the lecturers are very helpful.
