Flexible study options

At USQ we know that you have priorities other that studying. Sometimes you might need to work a bit more (or a bit less), spend time with your family or travel – but this doesn’t mean you have to give up study. Our flexible options mean you can take less (or more) courses, swap between on campus study and distance (online) study, take a break or study right through the calendar year.

At USQ, we work with you to help you reach your goals in the best way for you – after all, it’s your degree!

Our programs are available in a variety of study modes to fit in with your life. Find out what study modes are available for the course you are interested in from our programs and courses guide.

You can study on-campus

We have three campuses at Toowoomba, Springfield and Fraser Coast. You will need to attend lectures, tutorials and workshops on-campus as part of your study.

You can study distance (online) education

You are sent all your study materials and complete your program (degree) without having to attend classes on-campus. Many materials may be available online and students undertaking distance (online) study can talk with their lecturer, participate in study groups with other students and even download lecturers notes wherever you are.

You can study on-campus and by distance (online) education

This is a mix of both on-campus and distance (online) modes. This works really well if you have to work and live within commuting distance of our campuses - it effectively gives you the best of both worlds.

You can study full-time

This means you are taking a full-time study load (four courses per semester) and should complete your study in the recommended number of years.

You can study part-time

This means studying one, two, or even three courses per semester. When studying part-time, you enrol in only as many courses (subjects) that suit your lifestyle, so that you can fit your study into your life, work and family commitments.

You can study during the summer semester

Classes may be held during the summer teaching period. Subject to course availability, you can study all year round, instead of just studying in semester one and two. This may allow you to finish some programs sooner.

You can spread your workload over three semesters

At USQ, the year is broken up into three teaching sessions instead of two, so you have the ability to take the same number of subjects as a full-time student in the year, but spread out over the three semesters. This means you can finish your degree in the same amount of calendar years - but with a little less pressure in each semester. This option suits the personal and work commitments of many students.

You can attend intensive mode workshops

USQ Springfield offers intensive mode teaching in many postgraduate programs (which may vary from course to course), as well as in some undergraduate courses offered in semester three. The intensive mode of on-campus study is an enhanced form of distance education.

Comprehensive study materials are provided and intensive teaching blocks condense a full semester's lectures into two 3-day workshops where materials are reviewed, case studies are examined and leading industry practitioners share their experiences and skills. Students complete all other aspects of the course away from the campus. The intensive mode delivery enables you to benefit from peer-to-peer learning while giving you the flexibility to balance your study, work and lifestyle.
