Step 1 - Plan your preferences

Every year many qualified applicants miss out on a place at USQ because they do not select and order their program preferences wisely. To avoid this happening, you:

  • always place programs in order of your personal preferences- from your most desired program to your least preferred program
  • use all six preferences to enhance the possibility of receiving an offer
  • ensure you satisfy the entry requirements for all your preferences
  • only apply for programs that you would accept if offered
  • consider the start month and ensure preferences are ordered carefully as offers are made to eligible applicants in order of the major offer round date
  • use the correct QTAC program codes
  • do not list the same course code twice.

How to successfully plan your preferences

You are able to select 6 preferences with your application and you will be considered in all your nominated preferences. As outlined by QTAC, you should order your preferences using the following approach:

  • Preference 1 and 2: Include the 'ideal' programs you would really like to study even if your chances of gaining entry is not assured

  • Preference 3 and 4: Nominate 'realistic' programs that are less competitive, should provide another way to the career you want and can be used to upgrade to your 'ideal' program

  • Preference 5 and 6: These 'foot-in-the-door' programs are the ones you are prepared to do if you miss out on your earlier preferences and should be programs that have been quite easy to gain entry in previous years. These programs will assist you in upgrading or articulating to your 'ideal' program.

USQ offers transfer credit options which allow for the courses studied in your offer program to be transferred to a different program, if you follow the recommended enrolment pattern or advice from your Faculty. This ensures that there is no time added to your expected completion in your 'ideal' program.

Changing preferences

Applicants can change the order of their preferred programs or substitute new programs 14 days before the nominated closing dates for each offer round. Preferences may also be changed after an offer round for subsequent rounds in the same admissions period.
