Previous winners

For winners of an Award it is an opportunity to have their work publicly recognised. This recognition is valuable and can lead to further educational opportunities, improve career development and attract support and funding for future projects.

Past winners are important role models, inspiring other women and girls to be involved in areas in which women are traditionally under represented the areas of Science (including Mathematics), Engineering and Technology (SET).

Bernadette McCabe - winner of 2009 Best of the WEST Award for Innovation in Science and Mathematics

I like to promote the sciences by using a hands-on approach and real life examples. My aim is to introduce school students to biology by showing how it is connected to them personally, socially and in the community.
I believe an interest in science needs to be fostered from a young age to ensure a positive attitude and involvement in the sciences with future generations. Since the early 1990s Australia has seen a decrease in the number of students studying science at University, which could lead to a serious shortfall of students undertaking science careers in years to come.

It was wonderful to be recognised with an award last year for work that I am passionate about, and I encourage my colleagues to submit nominations for the 2010 awards.

Lindy McKeown – winner of Go WEST Best of the WEST Award for Innovation in Technology

It was an honour to receive the Best of the WEST award for my work in developing virtual worlds for distance learning students especially since I have spent so much of the last 16 years of my life telecommuting to work. I know how it feels to work remotely and to make the most of new technologies and this experience transfers into my design of online learning spaces. It seemed fitting for the Chancellor giving me the award online via video conference. The prize money gave me the opportunity to renew my professional subscription to the International Society for Technology in Education and to take on a volunteer role there as the International representative on the Membership Committee. I hope that some of the new virtual world tools we are currently developing will provide more opportunities for the remotely located students.
