The Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) is designed to provide graduates with advanced study in Information Systems and to develop in students a capacity to undertake independent research.

The Honours degree provides opportunities for motivated and highly qualified students to undertake advanced coursework and produce a research dissertation. Students develop the appropriate research skills which will allow them to either undertake research oriented careers or to undertake further studies at the Doctoral levels. Students are allowed flexibility in choice of one coursework course. This may come either from other courses in the discipline area or in the form of an independent study course tailored to the specific needs of the student.

Successful completion of the program will enable graduates to:

• identify, interpret and evaluate major issues of contemporary information systems theory and practice;
• comprehend and evaluate developments in a chosen information systems discipline area and critically examine the relationships between such developments and contemporary theory;
• apply a knowledge of the principles and ethics of research;
• report and publish research outcomes; and
• proceed to appropriate higher degree studies.

Entry to the Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) is available to students who have:

• either graduated or completed all requirements to be eligible to graduate with a Bachelor of Information Technology (Computer Software Development) or equivalent degree;
• normally completed these studies less than two years prior to the year of commencement;
• obtained a minimum grade point average of credit (GPA = 5.0 on a 7.0 point scale) for either:
  • the whole degree;
  • the second and third years of the degree; or
  • the major study of the degree; and
• submitted and had approved a proposed study plan.

Acceptance will be subject to the availability of a supervisor for the honours dissertation.

The BIT (Hons) specialising in Information Systems comprises two courses of coursework and six courses of research dissertation. In special circumstances, an independent study course may be available to enable students to undertake specific discipline related study under the supervision of an assigned staff member. Students will be required to submit a proposal before being considered to undertake this course. The dissertation will be a piece of independently conducted research. To successfully complete the dissertation, students will be required to select a topic, carry out supervised research on the chosen topic using an appropriate method and present and defend the results.
