Program focus
The Bachelor of Creative Arts will provide a unique interdisciplinary environment allowing students to have a fusion of artistic experience and academic study. Music, Creative Media (incorporating Multimedia), Theatre and Visual Arts disciplines are linked into one degree program. Students are able to create a flexible palette of choices where they can determine, through consultation with Program staff, a combination of specific discipline suites of theory and practice as well as adding another major from Creative Arts, Humanities or another USQ Faculty to complement their career pathway. For those seeking careers in education, there is also the option to choose a second teaching area.
Career opportunities
Creative Media (incorporating Multimedia): Opportunities exist in media/entertainment industries, television production, animator, video and sound production, web development, computer games, communication professions, education.
Music: Solo, ensemble, jazz performer, repetiteur, accompanist, orchestral musician, composer (including electronic music), scholar, studio teacher, secondary school teacher.
Theatre: Collaborative artist, events manager, play and screenwriter, arts administrator, community arts officer, youth arts officer, researcher, actor, marketing officer, secondary school teacher.
Visual Arts: Practising artist, arts administration, studio and gallery management, community arts, arts research, secondary school teacher.
Program aims
The program aims to produce graduates who have:

depth and focus in their specific discipline knowledge and skills;

the ability to research, apply theory and develop hybrid arts practice among a range of creative arts disciplines that comply with industry best practice;

the ability to explore materials, processes, methods and techniques that will contribute to a high level of conceptual, critical and expressive skills, perceptual awareness and independence of imagination;

an applied awareness of professional work habits, industry networks and expertise in the business of managing creative arts practice;

an appreciation of the cultural contributions offered by the creative arts to local and regional communities, Australian society and international contexts;

the ability to activate, develop, and maintain their particular vocational interests.
Program objectives
On successful completion of the program, students should be able to demonstrate:

a high level of discipline-based skills and knowledge that are reproducible and which will enable them to contribute to the creative potential of their communities;

a discriminating application of methods, concepts, techniques and theories in the creation of discipline-based and hybrid creative arts projects in professional, educational, community or commercial contexts;

a knowledge of the historical, ideological, critical, and ethical perspectives in the creative arts, in both traditional and contemporary cultural and social contexts;

a rigorous evaluation of the outcomes of creative arts projects

genuine engagement with relevant industry bodies and networks that will enable them to develop the work ethic necessary for practice as an independent, articulate professional creative artist;

a proficiency in the pursuit of research in creative arts; to document, and further explore the role this plays in cultural growth of a nation/society.
Admission requirements
Admission to the Bachelor of Creative Arts is in accordance with University admission guidelines for undergraduate programs and applicants will normally have completed year 12 or equivalent with a satisfactory achievement in English (4SA). For applicants who have not completed Year 12 or its equivalent, their application may be assessed on the basis of evidence they provide of experience, training, alternative qualifications or personal motivation which might compensate for the absence of formal qualifications.
All applicants will be required to attend an interview with staff from the School of Creative Arts. Interviewees must also bring their latest school academic results and comments about their scholastic and creative abilities from teachers and/or industry connections.

Visual Arts

Interview to discuss background, interests, aims and aspirations.

Present a reasonably broad folio of recent work completed over the past two years. The folio should show an awareness of drawing from life and an understanding of different media.

The criteria used for selecting students includes interest, enthusiasm and purpose in studying visual arts; career aspirations; knowledge of visual arts processes and theory; demonstrated perceptual ability and handskills; critical abilities; and evidence of self-motivation, initiative and commitment.
Theatre

Interview to discuss process of developing the material and artistic interests.
-
Audition through group workshop and audition piece: participation in a 2 hour practical drama workshop on day of interview with other potential students. In addition, preparation of a small 2 minute performance piece of material that is created by the student (can include a monologue).

Supply a 500 word project on a topic advised in the application materials.
How to apply
Domestic students
Application for undergraduate programs may be made through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). The same procedure applies whether you plan to study on-campus or by distance education.
If you completed Year 12 at a Queensland secondary school you will be assessed for entry on the basis of your Overall Position (OP) or equivalent score. Year 12 students from other states or territories are considered for entry on the basis of their UAI, ENTER or TER and the subject prerequisites indicated. Other applicants will be based on their overall Rank. You should ensure you submit your application by the closing dates.
International students
This program is offered to international students. An international student is a person who is not an Australian or New Zealand citizen and not an Australian permanent resident. Please refer to USQ International for information about entry requirements, visa arrangements and how to apply.
Program fees
Student contribution amount
For domestic students who are offered Commonwealth supported places, the Government pays some money directly to the University, but students are also required to make a contribution. This contribution is called the ‘student contribution’. For more information about student contribution amounts, including the calculation of fees for a particular program of study, refer to USQ fees.
Tuition fee

Program structure
The Bachelor of Creative Arts consists of 24 units. These are broadly divided into Discipline Majors (in Music, Theatre, Creative Media, or Visual Arts), Options, Electives and one Core Course from the Faculty of Arts. Each creative arts Discipline offers 16 courses for students which is made up of 8 courses in Theory and 8 in Practice of a Discipline. Students may elect to do a full Discipline Major of 16 courses in one Discipline area or divide this into 2 Majors of 8 courses across 2 Discipline areas. Together with CMS1000 Communication and Scholarship, students should take one of the following combinations of elements:

16 unit Discipline Major + 1 Core Course + 7 unit Major in either another discipline in the Bachelor of Creative Arts or Faculty of Arts. This is the most ideal combination for students seeking to do the one year graduate diploma in teaching upon completion in order to become a teacher as it provides ample room for a second teaching area;

16 unit Discipline Major + 1 Core Course + 4 unit Option + 3 Electives. This combination allows flexibility in choosing the best possible minor suite;
-
8 unit Discipline Major (Theory) + 8 unit Discipline Major (Practice) + 1 Core Course + 7 unit Major in the Bachelor of Creative Arts or Faculty of Arts;

8 unit Discipline Major (Theory) + 8 unit Discipline Major (Practice) + 1 Core Course + 4 unit Option + 3 Electives. This allows for maximum flexibility.
Students will be advised to enrol in specific combinations of majors, minors and electives to enhance their opportunities for employment or further study. Further details of these combinations can be obtained from the relevant Program Coordinator. In some instances, however, combinations preferred by individual students may not be available due to quota, timetable or enrolment pattern constraints.

Core courses
All students must take the core course CMS1000 Communication and Scholarship. The recommended pattern for enrolment in this core course by full-time on-campus students is in semester 1 year 1. This pattern should only be varied with the permission of the Program Coordinator. There are an additional 3 School Core courses that all students undertaking the BCA are advised to enrol in throughout the 3rd Year of their degree: BCA3000 BCA Project A; BCA3001 BCA Project B; BCA3002 Arts Business Practice.
Major studies
A Major Study is a specified group of courses with a value of eight units. A major must have courses over three levels and contain at least two courses at third level. The following major studies are offered:

Majors in the Bachelor of Creative Arts from outside the Faculty of Arts
Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Creative Arts are able to take one major or minor/elective study from programs in other Faculties after consultation with the Program Coordinator.
For Bachelor of Creative Arts purposes, a major in these areas comprises seven units (7 courses + 1 Core Course = 8) of which at least two must be at Level 3. Enrolment in these majors is subject to pre-requisites, quota availability and timetabling constraints.
These majors may only be listed as a third major or minor/elective study, not as a first or second major.
Minor studies
Option studies are designed to enable students to widen their knowledge and perspectives. Courses must be taken over two levels and should be in the same discipline or recognised multi-disciplinary area.
Students who take only two major studies must take one of the Options indicated in the Option studies section of this handbook. All of the Discipline areas of the Creative Arts will offer suites of minors and electives from their existing Major course offerings. Students should take courses to the value of at least four units in the selected Option Study. Choice of an Option will depend on the availability of the subject area, timetabling constraints, quotas and other restrictions such as interviews in certain areas of the Creative Arts, as well as the approval of the Program Coordinator.
There are three suites of Options that exist specifically to aid the delivery of performance content and outcomes for the School of Creative Arts. These are offered to students in 2nd and 3rd years after they have completed one full year of the BCA. These are:

Elective courses
Elective courses are designed to enable students to further increase their knowledge and widen their perspectives. Choice of an elective will depend on the availability of the course(s), timetabling constraints, quotas, and other restrictions such as auditions and interviews in certain areas of the Arts, as well as approval by the Program Coordinator.
Courses available for elective study are generally those found in Option studies and are listed in the Option studies section of this Handbook.
IT requirements
Access to high-level computers is necessary. On-campus students will access appropriately equipped laboratories, but should consider acquisition of their own computer. External students should be able to access a computer with the following minimum standards:

Pentium or equivalent, 128Mb Ram, 20Gb 7200 RPM Hard disk, SVGA with at least 32Mb video RAM, Windows 98/2000*, mouse, sound card, CD-RW drive, modem, or

Apple Mac or equivalent, 12Mb Ram, 20Gb 7200 RPM Hard Disk, 15 inch Monitor, Mac RO 9.2 or later, CD-RW drive, modem

Preferred browser standards are the latest versions of Internet Explorer or Netscape.

Creative Media major students are required to purchase an External 7200rpm Hard Drive with Firewire. This hardware will be necessary for use over the duration of the three years of the degree.
Note: Students with Windows 95 might be able to operate in this program for a short period until an upgrade is acquired All students should have access to email and the Internet via a computer running the latest versions of Internet web browsers such at Netscape Commander or Internet Explorer.
The University is installing a wireless network for students' computers. In order to take advantage of this facility and further enhance their on-campus learning environment, students should consider purchasing a notebook/laptop computer with wireless connectivity. A notebook/laptop may be required for some courses.
Residential schools
Some courses taken externally have a compulsory residential school as part of their requirement. These courses are identified by the letter 'R' in the Major structures.
Articulation
Students undertaking aspects of the Bachelor of Creative Arts as an extension of TAFE studies, or through any of our current Articulation Agreements (such as the College of Creative Arts in Melbourne), are encouraged to visit the USQ Faculty of Arts program listing for current advice on enrolments for 2009.
Exemptions

Course transfers
Students wishing to transfer from pre-2009 degree programs (such as Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Visual Arts, Bachelor of Theatre Arts, Bachelor of Multimedia) into the Bachelor of Creative Arts may do so, but only after consultation with their Program Coordinator or Head of School of Creative Arts.
Continuing students (enrolled prior to 2009)
Students currently enrolled in pre-existing programs are encouraged to visit the USQ Faculty of Arts program listing for advice on enrolment patterns for 2009 and 2010.
Honours
From 2009, the Bachelor of Creative Arts will have an embedded 4th Year honours program for students to articulate into immediately after their 3rd Year of study in the Bachelor of Creative Arts. Many of the courses will be shared with students and staff from the Bachelor of Arts in the School of Humanities and Communication in the Faculty of Arts.
Enrolment
All students are urged to adhere to the recommended enrolment patterns as detailed in relevant Sections. Completion of enrolment requirements will be necessary before a student will be permitted to enrol in more advanced courses.
Students should also heed the following advice:

One major of seven units or an minor study of four units or three elective units may be taken from programs outside the Faculty of Arts on the approval of the student's Program Coordinator;

If students wish to combine 2 Discipline Majors they must consult with the relevant Program Coordinator as to the appropriate Theory and Practice combinations available to them;

On-campus students should take courses in the on-campus (ONC) mode and will only be permitted to take courses externally during Semester 1 and 2 with the approval of their Program Coordinator. The variety of BCA courses offered on-line and in external (EXT) mode will increase throughout 2009 as the degree proceeds.

Students are required to monitor their own enrolments and seek help immediately from School of Creative Arts staff if anomalies or confusion occurs.

The final semester of 3rd year of the BCA only offers 2 Discipline courses + 1 Option and 1 Elective (at least 3 could be chosen in EXT mode). This is so students may use their Discipline courses to concentrate their efforts in the preparation for either entry into the industry (via secondments, industry networks, etc) through the creation of a large practical outcome or entry into the Honours or other postgraduate programs.
Recommended general pattern for part-time on-campus students
Students wishing to enrol in a part-time mode should consult with the relevant Program Coordinator to determine an appropriate part-time enrolment pattern.
