Program focus
This program aims to provide two key paths of study: an enhanced understanding of the basic issues and principles in the community sector and the development of a theoretical framework for people interested in becoming professional counsellors. The program affords the opportunity to engage in specialised study of marginalised groups, such as indigenous and disability communities.
Career opportunities
This is a foundation program for people who wish to work in community organisations, community development and in the counselling field as youth counsellors, welfare workers and support workers.

Professional accreditation
Counselling is an unregulated industry and there are no legal requirements for professional accreditation. To achieve membership with the Australian Counselling Association applicants must have attended a counselling program that has at least six courses specifically devoted to counselling. The Bachelor of Human Services (Counselling) has five counselling specific courses and a project that must be related to counselling [Accreditation by the ACA is being sought.]

Program aims
The aim of the program is to provide two key paths of study: an enhanced understanding of the basic issues and principles in the community sector and the development of a theoretical framework for people interested in becoming professional counsellors. In vocational terms it would provide a foundation program for people wishing to work in community organisations, community development and in the counselling field as youth counsellors, welfare workers, and support workers.

Program objectives
On successful completion of the program students should be able to demonstrate:
-
professional counselling and welfare development skills, including assessment, record keeping, legal and ethical responsibilities, micro-skills and theoretical frameworks
-
an understanding of professional and contextual issues in counselling and welfare organisations
-
research skills in welfare and counselling
-
an understanding of community development and welfare based on social justice/human rights perspective from within Australia, and globally
-
the ability to work in teams
-
understanding of the key issues in working within the community sector
-
an understanding of the environmental, economic and social context especially including such issues as sustainability, equity, and justice.

Admission requirements

Students wishing to undertake the Accounting minor under this degree should note that a pre-requisite requirement of Year 12 English and Maths (or equivalent) is desirable. If students have entered this program through the Tertiary Preparation Program (TPP) they should check the Maths pre-requisite requirements (TPP7182) for the Bachelor of Commerce before they enrol in these courses.
International applicants must have met the University's English language requirements or have completed the University's ELICOS/UNIPREP program.

Elective courses
Students who are completing a minor study are required to enrol in elective courses equivalent to two units. Students commencing this program may wish to consider studying CSC1402 Foundation Computing as an elective. This course provides students with effective practical skills in using a range of computing applications. Students commencing this program may wish to consider studying PSY1030 Cross-Cultural and Indigenous Psychology as an elective in the EXT mode semester 2 or Semester 3 offering. The aim of PSY1030 is to provide an increased understanding and awareness of cultural effects upon psychology which will hopefully lead to increased tolerance and respect for people of diverse cultures. Students may enrol in a minor and/or electives other than at USQ under collaborative cross-institutional arrangements, details of which must be negotiated with the Program Coordinator.
