Program focus

This program is designed to give students an awareness of the evolution of international relations, particularly relating to the culture and history of selected states. Students will gain an understanding of international relations issues, and the ability to analyse key process and phenomena, such as globalisation. Study of an approved Language Other Than English (LOTE) is a required feature of this program.

Career opportunities

There are careers available in the public service, ethnic affairs and immigration, foreign and defence affairs, business, international trade and tourism and teaching (with additional qualifications).

Professional accreditation

Graduates can apply for membership of the Australian Institute of International Affairs.

Program aims

Program objectives

On successful completion of the degree students should be able to demonstrate:

• the ability to express themselves with clarity and coherence

• basic standards in computer literacy

• an awareness of international relations both in theory and the practical application of theory

• an awareness of the culture and history of selected states and actors, an understanding of selected issues of international significance and of the evolution of the foreign policy of Australia and selected states

• the ability to identify, understand and solve problems

• an introduction to a Language Other Than English (LOTE)

• the ability to meet the specified aims and objectives of those majors chosen as part of the international studies degree

• an understanding of ethics in both the domestic and international environments.

Admission requirements

Admission to the Bachelor of International Studies is in accord with University admission guidelines for undergraduate programs, including successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent.

International applicants must have met the University's English language requirements or have completed the University's ELICOS/UNIPREP program.

How to apply

Domestic students

Application for undergraduate programs may be made through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). The same procedure applies whether you plan to study on-campus or by distance education.

If you completed Year 12 at a Queensland secondary school you will be assessed for entry on the basis of your Overall Position (OP) or equivalent score. Year 12 students from other states or territories are considered for entry on the basis of their UAI, ENTER or TER and the subject prerequisites indicated. Other applicants will be based on their overall Rank. You should ensure you submit your application by the closing dates.

International students

This program is offered to international students. An international student is a person who is not an Australian or New Zealand citizen and not an Australian permanent resident. Please refer to USQ International for information about entry requirements, visa arrangements and how to apply.

Program fees

Student contribution amount

For domestic students who are offered Commonwealth supported places, the Government pays some money directly to the University, but students are also required to make a contribution. This contribution is called the ‘student contribution’. Tuition fee

International fees

International students pay tuition fees. For details about international student fees, refer to the International Fee Schedule provided by USQ International.

Program structure

The Bachelor of International Studies consists of 24 units (generally requiring completion of 24 courses) and is structured as follows:

• 10 units of core studies including the International Relations Major

• seven units in a Major selected from the schedule below

• four units in a Minor study selected from the list below

• three units of elective studies

• at least two units of LOTE must be included in the degree program.

Required time limits

Students have a maximum of 9 years to complete this program.

Core courses

Major studies

A Major study is a specified group of courses with a value of seven units. A Major must have courses over three levels and contain at least two courses at third level. Students taking the Bachelor of International Studies must take the International Relations Major. A second Major must be chosen from one of the following areas of study:

• Languages Other Than English (LOTE) from UNE (French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese)

Students must select at least two units of LOTE in their degree program, and should note that the completion of a language is highly regarded by employers.

Minor studies

A Minor study is a specified group of courses with a value of four units. A Minor must have courses over at least two levels. Students should note that LOTE disciplines taken externally from USQ or UNE may require a residential school

Elective courses

Elective courses enable students to further increase their knowledge and widen their perspectives. Bachelor of International students will take elective courses from the Majors or Minors listed above, or from any other courses offered at USQ.

Residential schools

Residential schools may be required for students taking LOTE courses externally through UNE.

Exemptions

Students are eligible for exemptions as per Academic Regulation 5.5.3.

Course transfers

Courses may be transferred to or from the Bachelor of Arts .
