Program focus

For Arts students

The program aims to provide students with an introduction to study in Arts disciplines and programs, and to provide a basic qualification for credit transfer/exemption in other programs.

For students intending to transfer to other USQ programs

The Diploma of Arts is available as an entry point for most USQ programs not subject to auditions and interview requirements. This program should appeal to those who have left school but who want to sample a range of university subjects before embarking on a more specialised degree program. The program offers substantial choice and flexibility, allowing entry to a wide range of career and study options, including transfer to other degree programs.

The programs aim to produce diplomats who have:

• demonstrated competencies in communication skills necessary for further academic study in appropriate discipline areas

• acquired basic knowledge in one or more disciplines in a relevant degree program.

For students intending to transfer to other USQ programs

This program aims to:

• provide students with an introduction to university study by a free selection of courses from across the University

Program objectives

To produce diplomates who have:

• an awareness of the nature of study in the arts, humanities, and social sciences

• developed foundation knowledge, skills and competencies in at least one discipline area

• a fundamental ability to express thoughts with clarity and coherence in written and/or oral forms

• acquired sufficient knowledge to make informed choices about possible further study.

Admission requirements

Successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent.

Students seeking to enrol in Music, Theatre or Visual Arts courses must pass the relevant audition/portfolio requirements.

International applicants must have met the University's English language requirements or have completed the University's ELICOS/UNIPREP program.

How to apply

Domestic students

Application for undergraduate programs may be made through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). The same procedure applies whether you plan to study on-campus or by distance education.

If you completed Year 12 at a Queensland secondary school you will be assessed for entry on the basis of your Overall Position (OP) or equivalent score. Year 12 students from other states or territories are considered for entry on the basis of their UAI, ENTER or TER and the subject prerequisites indicated. Other applicants will be based on their overall Rank. You should ensure you submit your application by the closing dates.

International students

This program is offered to international students. An international student is a person who is not an Australian or New Zealand citizen and not an Australian permanent resident. Please refer to USQ International for information about entry requirements, visa arrangements and how to apply.

Program fees

Commonwealth supported place

A Commonwealth supported place is where the Australian Government makes a contribution towards the cost of your higher education and you as a student pay a student contribution amount, which varies depending on the courses undertaken. You are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the Course Fee Finder.

Commonwealth Supported students may be eligible to defer their fees through a Government loan called HECS-HELP.

International full fee paying place

International students pay full fees. Full fees vary depending on the courses that are taken and whether they are studied on-campus, via distance education/online. You are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the Course Fee Finder.

Program structure

The Diploma of Arts comprises eight units of study, generally requiring completion of eight courses, one of which is a core course. The remaining seven units of courses come from USQ course offerings. While students may choose any seven courses, it is recommended that study is chosen from three discipline areas unless students plan to complete a major study in a single discipline area. The Diploma of Arts may articulate into other degree programs.

Required time limits

Students have a maximum of 4 years to complete this program.

Core courses

Students must complete CMS1000 Communication and Scholarship or equivalent.

Major studies

Students may enrol in any seven courses for which they have met any pre-requisite requirements. However, where students wish to progress to full degree programs, it is strongly recommended that they select courses from at least two different majors (and preferably up to three majors) in order to ensure a smooth progression to degree programs.

Students may choose to complete an major by taking seven units of study in the one discipline, but this will normally require the completion over more than one year of study. Such completed majors will be noted on the Diploma testamur.

Note: not all courses are available at Fraser Coast campus.

Residential schools

A residential school is compulsory for students enrolled externally in Indonesian Language courses.

Articulation

A Diploma of Arts, subject to selection of appropriate courses, articulates into all USQ programs. Students must keep in mind that normal entry requirements still apply for their chosen area of study ie interviews, auditions etc

Exit points

This program can be used as an exit point for all USQ programs.

Exemptions

Graduates from other USQ programs may be exempted from the core requirements of the Diploma of Arts.

Course transfers

Courses may be transferred to other programs; students should consult the relevant Faculty.

Notes

Students must take CMS1000 . Note that courses at Fraser Coast are limited.
It is also possible to use the remaining seven units of study to complete an Arts major, e.g. History, Language, etc., but because of the possible pre-requisites, this will normally mean completing this sequence of courses in part-time mode across more than one year of study.
