Program focus
This program is designed to develop effective professional drama educators. The program incorporates elements that respond directly to contemporary developments in both drama education and general education, while retaining sufficient structural flexibility to address any emerging issues and trends in times of constant change. Students choose a second (minor) teaching area from English Literature or History.
Career opportunities
Opportunities exist teaching in secondary schools or providing private drama instruction.

Program aims
The Bachelor of Drama Bachelor of Education (Secondary) combined program is designed to develop effective professional Drama educators, eligible for registration by the Queensland College of Teachers (formerly the Board of Teacher Registration, Queensland) in Queensland. The program, therefore, will develop appropriate skills, knowledge and understanding required by a beginning Drama teacher through a theory-based and practically oriented teaching degree, in order to obtain recognized specialist professional certification necessary for employment as Drama teachers in Queensland.

Program objectives
The objectives of the Bachelor of Drama Bachelor of Education (Secondary) are:
-
to provide a combined program of study that will enable students to gain a thorough knowledge and understanding of the complex skills employed in the creation and execution of drama and theatre
-
to provide a thorough knowledge of performance theory and of the history and conventions of dramatic writing and theatre practice
-
to foster a positive attitude towards self-criticism and self-assessment, and a readiness to seek new, selective, and personal solutions to creative problems
-
to provide a basic understanding of some of the contemporary issues relating to society in general and Australian society in particular
-
to develop graduates who have a thorough knowledge of the history of conventions of theatre/drama practice, writing for theatre/drama and theory of performance
-
to instill the importance of critical thinking and the development of sound drama pedagogy for a diverse range of learners/audiences
-
to develop knowledge and understanding essential to their professional role as educators
-
to foster appropriate personal qualities and attitudes
-
to develop professional skills and techniques which are related directly to effective teaching and learning, and which are appropriate to their level of professional development.

Admission requirements
Standard

Applicants must have obtained an Overall Position (OP) (or its equivalent) and at least 'Satisfactory Achievement' or equivalent in English and although completion of Senior Drama is not compulsory, it would be a definite advantage. Applicants will be required to attend an interview on-campus or Brisbane in November. This will consist of an interview by Department of Theatre staff, the discussion of a project completed by the applicant, and a performance presentation (audition) of the applicant's own creation. Application bookings are essential. Contact theatre@usq.edu.au or +61 7 4631 1121 for details.
Special
Applicants who do not meet standard admission requirements may apply for special consideration. Applicants may be offered a place in a course if they can demonstrate that special experience or training compensates for the absence of the formal qualifications identified above.

Practical experience
Eligibility to undertake professional experience in Queensland educational settings
Under the terms of the Commission for Children and Young People Act (Qld. 2000), pre-service educators undertaking professional experience are considered to be volunteers engaged in regulated employment. As such, all pre-service educators must apply to the Commission to be issued with a notice that they are suitable to work in child-related employment. As part of this application, the pre-service educators must consent to the Commission conducting a criminal history check as the key element of the process of determining suitability. All applications for a suitability notice must be made in conjunction with the school or other site at which the pre-service educator is to conduct the first professional experience in the program. Pre-service educators who do not make application, or who do apply but are subsequently deemed unsuitable, will not be able to undertake the professional experience components of the program.
Further information, including a list of serious offences which could lead to a pre-service educator being deemed unsuitable, are available from the Commission's website at http://www.ccypcg.qld.gov.au/employment/
