Program objectives

The Master of TESOL (Honours) will provide students who possess demonstrated academic and professional competence, the opportunity to study at an advanced level in specific areas related to language education.

On completion of this program, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

• critically analyse relevant professional issues affecting current educational practices in the area of applied linguistics and language learning and teaching

• locate and critically assess the relevance and value of recent research in the area of applied linguistics and language learning and teaching

• acknowledge and rationalise the importance of legal and ethical considerations in the conduct and evaluation of research

• plan clear research designs and select and use appropriate methods of treatment in significant research projects

• develop, present and defend research proposals and conclusions to supervisors and fellow students

• design, develop and implement a research study in their chosen area of specialisation.

Admission requirements

Normal Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Master of TESOL (Honours) applicants must:

1. have completed an undergraduate degree and completed an education qualification, or a Bachelor of Education (four-year degree), or an equivalent four-year qualification in education

2. have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement in their previous undergraduate studies (GPA of 5.8 or higher)

3. have an acceptable level of relevant professional experience, which normally would include two years of involvement in professional education or equivalent activities, with a record of appropriate professional achievement and leadership.

Special Admission Requirements

Where candidates do not meet the above criteria, but are deemed to have equivalent qualifications and experience, they may gain entry into the program. Depending on their background such 'special entry' candidates may be required to pursue additional background studies in second language education to a maximum of two units as determined by the Dean in consultation with the Program Coordinator.

Commonwealth supported place

A Commonwealth supported place is where the Australian Government makes a contribution towards the cost of your higher education and you as a student pay a student contribution amount, which varies depending on the courses undertaken. Commonwealth Supported students may be eligible to defer their fees through a Government loan called HECS-HELP.

Domestic full fee paying place

Domestic full fee paying places are funded entirely through the full fees paid by the student. Full fees vary depending on the courses that are taken. You are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the Course Fee Finder.

Program structure

The Master of TESOL (Honours) program requires the completion of a total of 12 units of coursework and research. Students should choose eight courses from the list of offerings below, four of which are compulsory, EDR8000 Foundations of Contemporary Educational Research Methods *, LIN5000, LIN8001 and LIN5002. The remaining four units will comprise the thesis.

Required time limits

Students have a maximum of 5 years to complete this program.

Exemptions

Exemptions will be granted for relevant studies successfully completed at postgraduate level in the last five years and may be considered for studies successfully completed in the last 10 years. The maximum exemptions granted will be no more than half of the required courses for the program.

Other information

Assessment

Assessment of the coursework courses will involve one or more of the following: written assignments, take-home examinations, reflective journal keeping, seminar presentation (where appropriate), report writing, development of work courses, questionnaires, marking schemes, etc. as appropriate to each course. In addition, students will be required to write a thesis/dissertation.

The thesis will conform to the regulations and procedures for research projects as outlined in the University Calendar Part 4.4 and 4.5.

Notes

Students cannot proceed to LIN8002 Methodology in Teaching a Second Language previously LIN5002 unless they have successfully completed LIN5000 and LIN8001. Students are required to complete LIN5000 and LIN8001 before they enrol in LIN5003.
