Program focus

The program is designed to meet the professional and continuing education needs of a wide range of professionals in a variety of education technology settings and sectors. It caters for those working in an educational context, specifically teachers, managers and educational designers working in both formal education settings and off-campus services. Similarly, it caters for those working in corporate environments: these include, but are not limited to, training and organisational development units of businesses and those industries operating online or through distributed learning networks. The main focus of the teaching and learning will be to develop critical thinking, intellectual engagement and the students’ ability to design, develop, implement, manage and evaluate programs in technology-enhanced learning environments. A key feature of the program is that it prepares graduates who value diversity and inclusiveness, who are innovators and navigators of sustainable change.

We are currently redeveloping our programs for 2009. This area of study will remain available, with greater flexibility.

Program aims

Students are encouraged to become engaged professionals and collaborative members of a learning community.

Program objectives

The students/graduates will develop:

• knowledge and competencies in the use of information and communication technologies

• engagement with and critical reflection upon theoretical frameworks and key concepts in the area of educational applications of information and communication technologies as relevant to a variety of transnational and multi-sectoral contexts

• capacity to critically analyse relevant professional issues information and communication technologies

• a high level of academic competence to undertake independent project/research work in the area of educational technology and online learning environments.

Admission requirements

To qualify for admission to the Master of Education Technology, applicants must normally have:

• completed a three-year undergraduate degree or equivalent from a recognised university

• access to a professional learning environment e.g. formal education settings, workplace training in business and industry, distributed learning networks

• appropriate resources to facilitate ready access to the Internet

• ready access to a personal email address

• the skills required to access and manipulate materials delivered electronically.

International applicants must meet the University's requirements for English proficiency.

Alternative entry

Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements may apply for alternative entry if they believe that they can demonstrate that they have qualifications and/or experience that might be considered equivalent to those required for normal entry.

Other applicants should apply for a postgraduate certificate.

International applicants must have met the University's English language requirements or have completed the University's ELICOS/EAP program.

Program fees

Commonwealth supported place

A Commonwealth supported place is where the Australian Government makes a contribution towards the cost of your higher education and you as a student pay a student contribution amount, which varies depending on the courses undertaken. You are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the Course Fee Finder.
Commonwealth Supported students may be eligible to defer their fees through a Government loan called HECS-HELP.

Domestic full fee paying place

Domestic full fee paying places are funded entirely through the full fees paid by the student. Full fees vary depending on the courses that are taken. You are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the Course Fee Finder.

International full fee paying place

International students pay full fees. Full fees vary depending on the courses that are taken and whether they are studied on-campus, via distance education/online. You are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the Course Fee Finder.

Program structure

To be awarded a Masters degree in the Faculty of Education, a student must have completed eight education-related units at postgraduate level, of which at least four must be at level 8. Courses awarded as 'unspecified electives' through exemptions are classified as level 5 only.

It is the students’ responsibility to ensure correct enrolment in the program structure to meet graduation requirements. While this program is offered with 2 possible pathways, it is classified by DEST as a course work Masters degree (refer to Table 1). Both pathways comprise foundation studies, professional studies, research/evaluation and projects. The coursework pathway offers the possibility for additional electives. Please consult the details for each pathway below. The program will be taken over a minimum period of two years of part-time external study or one year of full-time external study.

Note: Some courses have assessment work that requires collaborative activities and/or collaboration to develop a single assessment response. These workgroups rely on timely participation by all members.

Required time limits

Students have a maximum of 5 years to complete this program.

Exemptions

Exemptions for courses in the Program may be granted where applicants can demonstrate that they have successfully completed an equivalent postgraduate course or have otherwise achieved the objectives of the relevant course. Exemptions may be granted on the basis of professional development activities or extensive work experience if it can be demonstrated that through those activities the student has achieved learning outcomes equivalent to those of a relevant postgraduate course. Where a student's program of study includes electives, exemption may be granted for one or more electives where students can demonstrate successful completion of work of a type and standard equivalent to an elective study.

Students intending to apply for exemptions should consult Section 3.5 of the Enrolment Policy. Applications for exemption will be expected to comply with the relevant USQ and Faculty regulations and should demonstrate that the objectives of the course for which exemption is sought have been achieved. Within the framework of those regulations, the following points should be given particular consideration:

• the maximum proportion of the Program which may be exempted is 50%

• students may NOT claim exemption for work on which they relied for admission to the Program

• exemptions will NOT normally be granted for study completed more than five years prior to submission of the application for exemption

• applications for exemption on the basis of study completed prior to entering the Program will NOT normally be accepted beyond the end of the first semester of enrolment in the Program

• credit will NOT normally be granted for work undertaken concurrently with the Program unless the application is submitted and approved before the work is undertaken with credit subject to satisfactory completion of the approved work.

Transfer of credit from other incomplete USQ award programs may be permitted where there is similar or appropriate content. Students should seek advice from the Program Administrator before applying for exemptions.

To best position yourself for later PhD studies, the Research Pathway is recommended.

Notes:

• It is recommended that the program of study commence with one of the courses in the Foundation Studies section of the table.

• Courses FET8610 and FET5622 require the skill to develop a web page. Students without this ability should first complete course FET5621 .

• EDR8060 Masters Project 1and EDR8061 Masters Project II are only available for the Research pathway and should be taken after four other Education Technology courses have been completed.
