Program focus
The program provides registered nurses, medical practitioners
and allied health workers who wish to embark on a research-based or
academic career with an opportunity to do so. Students will, with
supervision and approval, select a research topic and prepare a dissertation
on that topic.
Program aims
The aims of the Master of Health are to:

promote the advancement of knowledge relating to professional
practice in the areas of nursing, medicine and allied health
-
enable competent, committed health professionals to pursue personal
goals of research and advanced scholarship in relation to their areas
of specialisation
-
enable graduates to demonstrate advanced understanding of ethical
principles relating to research
-
enable graduates to conceptualise and undertake individual and
collaborative research.
Program objectives
On completion of the dissertation for the Master of Health,
candidates will be able to:

show depth of knowledge of the research topic and the discipline(s)
it embraces
-
demonstrate capacity for clear, methodological thinking
-
practice ethical principles relating to research
-
demonstrate mastery of analytical techniques appropriate for
the research
-
present the results of their research in a succinct and cogent
form, with suitable illustration
-
contribute to knowledge in the area of their research topic.
Admission requirements
For normal entry into the Master of Health, candidates must
have successfully completed at least four years of academic study
at either the undergraduate or postgraduate level leading to an award
at the Bachelor level or equivalent. All candidates must have successfully
completed the courseHSC8050 Research Methodology for the Human Sciences
or its equivalent before entry to the program. Assessment
of equivalence will be based upon other academic study and outstanding
professional performance as determined by the Department of Nursing
and Midwifery Research and Higher Degree Committee.
Program fees
Domestic full fee paying place
Domestic full fee paying places are funded entirely through
the full fees paid by the student. Full fees vary depending on the
courses that are taken. You are able to calculate the fees for a particular
course via the Course Fee
Finder.
Domestic full fee paying students may be eligible
to defer their fees through a Government loan called FEE-HELP.
International full fee paying place
International students pay full fees. Full fees vary depending
on the courses that are taken and whether they are studied on-campus,
via distance education/online. You are able to calculate the fees
for a particular course via the Course Fee Finder.
Research training scheme (RTS)
The Research Training Scheme (RTS) provides Commonwealth-funded
higher degree by research (HDR) students with an ‘entitlement’
to an exemption from course fees for the equivalent of four years
full-time study in an accredited HDR program. If a student's RTS entitlement
expires before they have completed their program they will be required
to pay full tuition fees. As there may be limited RTS places available,
some students may be required to pay fees for all or part of their
program. The USQ Office
of Research and Higher Degrees will advise students of their
eligibility for an RTS place.
Program structure
The program contains eight units comprised of four two-unit
courses.
The emphasis of the Master of Health is on the development of
a dissertation based on a research project in the area of health.
The project will be selected by the candidate and will require approval
by the Master of Health Program Coordinator.
Required time limits
Students have a maximum of 2 years to complete this program.
Residential schools
Students are required to attend one four day residential school in Semester 1 of each year of enrolment.
This is to present their work at a Departmental Seminar and meet with
other students and supervisors.
