Program focus

By combining the Principal Study in Visual Arts Practice and Theoretical Study strands of the Bachelor of Visual Arts with a 16-course professional education component from the Faculty of Education, two courses of USQ core studies and two History courses, students will gain sufficient practical and theoretical visual arts experience to enable them to become effective art teachers with a teaching minor in History. This combined degree is designed to prepare teachers for employment in compulsory and post-compulsory education sectors.

Program objectives

The Bachelor of Visual Arts and Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is designed to prepare teachers for employment in both compulsory and post-compulsory education sectors and to satisfy the National Competency Framework for Beginning Teaching as outlined below:

• using and developing professional knowledge and values

• communicating, interacting and working with students and others

• planning and managing the teaching and learning process

• monitoring and assessing student progress and learning outcomes

• reflecting, evaluating and planning for continuous improvement.

Underlying these objectives is the important principle that teacher education is a continuing process embracing both pre-service and in-service education. Accordingly, graduates of the Bachelor of Visual Arts and Bachelor of Education (Secondary) program will be competent beginning teachers able to assume a continuing responsibility for their own professional and career development.

Admission requirements

Standard

Applicants who have completed Year 12 at a Queensland secondary school (or its equivalent) are eligible for consideration under the standard admission requirements. The Overall Position (or its equivalent) is used as the general basis for selection. An interview and portfolio are required as well as a Sound Achievement over four semesters in English. Special

Applicants not meeting standard admission requirements may apply for special consideration. Applicants may be offered a place in a program if they can demonstrate that special experience or training compensates for the absence of the formal qualifications identified above.

Content studies in the relevant discipline areas necessary to meet entry requirements for the Education component will be met through the discipline studies of the degree.

Visual Arts requirements

• Interview to discuss background, interests, aims and aspirations.

• Present a reasonably broad folio of recent work completed over the past two years. The folio should show an awareness of drawing from life and an understanding of different media.

• The criteria used for selecting students includes interest, enthusiasm and purpose in studying visual arts; career aspirations; knowledge of visual arts processes and theory; demonstrated perceptual ability and handskills; critical abilities; and evidence of self-motivation, initiative and commitment.

Program fees

Student contribution amount

For domestic students who are offered Commonwealth supported places, the Government pays some money directly to the University, but students are also required to make a contribution. This contribution is called the ‘student contribution’. Tuition fee

Program structure

Areas of Study

Students seeking additional preparation for work in the Catholic Education system may complete Religious Education courses available cross-institutionally through the Australian Catholic University in external mode. Students intending to do this should negotiate with the Program Coordinator to seek possible exemption from one of the Secondary electives.

Required time limits

Students have a maximum of 9 years to complete this program.

Practical experience

Eligibility to undertake professional experience in Queensland educational settings

Under the terms of the Commission for Children and Young People Act (Qld. 2000), pre-service educators undertaking professional experience are considered to be volunteers engaged in regulated employment. As such, all pre-service educators must apply to the Commission to be issued with a notice that they are suitable to work in child-related employment. As part of this application, the pre-service educators must consent to the Commission conducting a criminal history check as the key element of the process of determining suitability. All applications for a suitability notice must be made in conjunction with the school or other site at which the pre-service educator is to conduct the first professional experience in the program. Pre-service educators who do not make application, or who do apply but are subsequently deemed unsuitable, will not be able to undertake the professional experience components of the program.

Exemptions

Students transferring from other programs or from other universities may be eligible to apply to the Program Coordinator for exemptions.

Recommended enrolment pattern

Students should not deviate from this pattern without first discussing it with the Program Administration Office or the Program Coordinator.

Notes

Two units must be taken at third year level for each major.
Professional Context Experience must be commenced in the first year of the program.
