Program focus

The Master of Project Management aims to produce graduates who have appropriate skills and knowledge to be capable of managing small, medium and large-sized projects as a senior team leader, a project manager or project director. Students may also choose specialisations from other Faculty of Business coursework masters programs, such as any of the specialisations from the Master of Business Administration .

Program objectives

Upon completion of the Master of Project Management students will be able to:

• demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical structure of project management as defined by the Project Management Body of Knowledge

• demonstrate essential skills in relation to identification and analysis of logistics management, and integrate logistics management into the overall operation of the organisation

• apply the theoretical principles of project management to a project environment in relation to project::

  • scheduling and time management

  • cost management

  • quality management

  • human resources management

  • communications management

  • risk management

  • procurement management

  • integration management

  • scope management

  
  

• apply management skills acquired through elective courses in the context of project management.

Admission requirements

Candidates for entry into the Master of Project Management must:

• hold at least a three-year tertiary qualification at bachelor degree or equivalent level from a recognised institution in an appropriate discipline as determined by the Director, USQ Australian Graduate School of Business

• have a minimum of two years full-time equivalent relevant work experience as determined by the Director, USQ Australian Graduate School of Business.

International candidates for admission into this program must meet the University's English language proficiency requirements for postgraduate students. Please refer to Academic Regulation 5.4 of the University Calendar.

Candidates who do not hold a bachelor degree will be considered for admission to the Postgraduate Certificate in Business if they have had a minimum of five years full-time equivalent relevant work experience as determined by the Director, USQ Australian Graduate School of Business. On successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate in Business, students may articulate into the Master of Project Management.

International students 2008

This program is offered to international students. An international student is a person who is not an Australian or New Zealand citizen and not an Australian permanent resident. Please refer to USQ International for information about entry requirements, visa arrangements and how to apply.

Program fees

Tuition fee

Domestic fee-paying places are funded entirely through the tuition/direct fees paid by the student. Tuition/direct fees vary depending on the courses that are taken. For more information about Tuition Fees, including the calculation of fees for a particular program of study, refer to USQ Fees.

International fees

Program structure

The Master of Project Management has two strands: Project Management and Complex Project Management. Each is comprised of eight single-unit courses as follows:

Project management

This strand is the Project management in the Master of Project Management and consists of:

• a choice of four core from five courses

• one specialisation or four elective courses.

Project Management stand students may study one of the following specialisation areas: Information Systems, Leadership, Property or any specialisation from the Master of Business Administration.

Complex project management

This strand is the Complex project management specialisation in Master of Project Management and consists of 8 specified single-unit courses.

Specialisations

Students completing four courses from a single specialisation will be entitled to an appropriate endorsement on their testamur.

Some courses in these specialisations are only available in external mode.

Note: Students may also choose specialisations from the Master of Business Administration.

Electives

Students may complete any four courses at 5000 or 8000 level from the Faculty of Business coursework Master programs subject to prerequisite requirements. Alternately students may choose 5000 or 8000 courses from any USQ coursework Master program with the approval of the Director, USQ Australian Graduate School of Business.

Required time limits

Students have a maximum of 4 years to complete this program.

Articulation

On completion of the Master of Project Management, students may apply for entry into the Master of Business Administration program. The number of courses to be completed to satisfy the requirements to graduate from the Master of Business Administration will depend on the courses completed in the Master of Project Management. Students wishing to consider this option should discuss their choice of courses with the Director, USQ Australian Graduate School of Business.

It is possible for students who do not meet standard admission requirements to articulate into the Master of Project Management from the Postgraduate Certificate in Business provided they have achieved a GPA of at least 4.0.

Students who wish to articulate to the higher award must lodge an application for entry to the relevant program.

Exit points

Students who do not complete the Master of Project Management, but who satisfy all the requirements of the Postgraduate Certificate in Business may be permitted to exit with that qualification.

Exemptions

Candidates for admission to the Master of Project Management may be eligible for up to four units of exemption on the basis of either:

• prior successful completion of relevant, equivalent postgraduate study from a recognised university or institution offering equivalent study; or

• accreditation from the Australian Institute of Project Management in their RegPM accreditation program, but only if accreditation is achieved at RPM (Level 5) or higher, and only after completion of the four core courses for this program. Refer to the Australian Graduate School of Business (AGSB) for further information. An exemption granted under this provision will be for one unit only and will be included in the maximum number of exemptions available for this program as indicated above.

Claims for exemption should be submitted prior to or at the time of enrolment in a course. Each claim will be assessed on individual merit in line with the Faculty's exemption policies. Exemptions approved in this program will not automatically apply to other programs offered by USQ.

The recommended enrolment pattern set out in the table below is for a part-time student commencing the program in semester 1. It is strongly recommended that students enrol in MGT8022 Project Management Framework prior to, or at the same time as, enrolling in subsequent project management courses.

Some of the courses in the Master of Project Management are offered in more than one semester. This provides flexibility for students and, consequently, there will be many different enrolment patterns.
