Program focus

The program is designed to enable educators in the tertiary sector who already have a degree or diploma, to acquire an innovative credential in tertiary teaching and learning. The program focuses on applying educational theories to practical situations in university and other tertiary educational settings in order to design, develop, implement and evaluate emerging learning environments.

We are currently redeveloping our programs for 2009. This area of study will remain available, with greater flexibility.

Program aims

Demand for professional education and training is increasing. The Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching and Learning is designed to enable educators in the tertiary sector who already have a degree or diploma, to acquire a recognised education qualification. The criterion-oriented program design focuses on the knowledge, skills, performance competencies and attitudes necessary for tertiary educators to develop their planning, instruction, assessment, evaluation and program design capabilities to a high standard.

Program objectives

On the successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching and Learning, the student will be able to:

• design, implement and evaluate programs of instruction which meet the needs of the learners in the student's particular context within a tertiary teaching organisation

• demonstrate an ability to select and implement teaching and learning strategies appropriate to a given tertiary education context

• assess, analyse and report on learning outcomes in line with accepted guidelines for assessment and measurement in tertiary teaching organisations

• engage in self evaluation processes and formulate plans of action for continuous improvement in teaching and learning

• construct an evidence-based portfolio to demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement in tertiary teaching and learning.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for enrolment in this program, an applicant must:

• hold a recognised undergraduate university degree or three-year diploma, or equivalent post-compulsory qualifications

• be engaged in, or have access to, an appropriate teaching environment; in an approved setting in the tertiary education sector (written verification of such engagement is required before enrolment is confirmed.

In order to satisfy the requirements of the core course TEA5101, students are required to identify and work with a suitable mentor approved by the Program Coordinator.

Many education courses include a practical component (professional experience, project work, research, assessment, etc.) that may require engagement with children under the age of 18. It is your responsibility to ensure that you possess a current suitability card (Blue Card) before commencing any practical components of this program. International applicants must have met the University's English language requirements or have completed the University's ELICOS/UNIPREP program.

International students

This program is offered to international students. An international student is a person who is not an Australian or New Zealand citizen and not an Australian permanent resident. Please refer to USQ International for information about entry requirements, visa arrangements and how to apply.

Program fees

Student contribution amount

For domestic students who are offered Commonwealth supported places, the Government pays some money directly to the University, but students are also required to make a contribution. This contribution is called the ‘student contribution’. Tuition fee

Program structure

To be awarded a Graduate Certificate in the Faculty of Education, a student must normally have completed four units of credit at levels 1-8, of which no more than two can be at level 8 and no more than three can be at level 3 or lower.

It is the students' responsibility to ensure correct enrolment in the program structure to meet graduation requirements. The program consists of four units - two Core Studies in education and two Professional Studies Electives. For this program students are required to complete:

Required time limits

Students have a maximum of 3 years to complete this program.

Articulation

Under certain circumstances, students completing the Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching and Learning(depending on electives studied), may be able to partially articulate their studies into Masters degrees offered in the Faculty of Education at University of Southern Queensland. Only courses in levels 5 or 8 may be used for articulation into a Master of Education program. For further information, contact the Program Administration Office.

Other information

Core courses in this program are offered via online delivery. While some elective courses are delivered using 'print-based external' materials, it is not possible to complete the program without access to the Internet. Access to the Internet and an email address are required to study a course offered via the Internet. Study materials for these courses are available at the commencement of the semester and can be accessed via http://usqconnect.usq.edu.au. A username and password are required for access to the study materials.

Recommended enrolment pattern

To be awarded a Graduate Certificate in the Faculty of Education, a student must normally have completed four units of credit at levels 1-8, of which no more than two can be at level 8 and no more than three can be at level 3 or lower.

The developmental nature of this program requires students to follow the recommended enrolment pattern as follows:

1. All students must enrol in TEA5101 Exploring Teaching and Learning in Tertiary Contexts: A Critical Self-Analysis, as the first course in this program. It is recommended that no other courses be undertaken alongside TEA5101 in the same semester, as a core outcome of this course requires students to design and justify a subsequent program of study. Students should consult their Program Coordinator for further details.

2. TEA5101 has two days of compulsory workshops and one day of optional workshops.

3. Two elective courses are identified in the teaching capacity enhancement plan developed in TEA5101 Exploring Teaching and Learning in Tertiary Contexts: A Critical Self-Analysis.

4. All students must enrol in FET5302 Tertiary Teaching Capacity Enhancement: Reflection and Evaluation as the final course in this program.
