Program focus
The Master of Nursing (Honours) program is designed for graduates of the Master of Nursing program who wish to extend their postgraduate skills to include the capacity to conduct an independent nursing research project. The Master of Nursing (Honours) program will provide a pathway to PhD studies, which will be of particular interest to nurses seeking an academic career or a research appointment with relevant research or health agencies.

Program aims
The program aims to enhance the practice of experienced nurses in the areas of clinical practice, management or education and research.

Program objectives
On completion of the program graduates will be able to:

function in leadership roles in their chosen area of nursing or health care

lead scholarly enquiry into, and be prepared to publicly comment on, issues that effect nursing and health care

monitor, evaluate and provide leadership in the development of State, National and International trends in nursing and health care
-
act as mentors for, and give support to, fellow nurses or other health care workers in their quests to increase their knowledge and leadership skills
-
critically analyse and contribute to the ongoing development of the roles of the nurse practitioner, educator or manager
-
undertake independent nursing research projects.

Program fees
Commonwealth supported place
A Commonwealth supported place is where the Australian Government makes a contribution towards the cost of your higher education and you as a student pay a student contribution amount, which varies depending on the courses undertaken. Commonwealth Supported students may be eligible to defer their fees through a Government loan called HECS-HELP.
Domestic full fee paying place
Domestic full fee paying places are funded entirely through the full fees paid by the student. Full fees vary depending on the courses that are taken. You are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the Course Fee Finder.

Program structure
The program contains 12 units. There are six compulsory courses of one unit each, two units of electives, and a four-unit research project.

Program completion requirements
To qualify for the award of Master of Nursing (Honours), a candidate must complete or be exempted from courses with a total value of 12 units within five years of first admission to the program, or to the Master of Nursing, subject to the following.
Of the units counted to qualify for the award:

at least eight units shall be for courses completed at USQ

six units shall be for the courses:

two units shall be for postgraduate (Level 5 or 8) courses, approved by the Program Coordinator or selected from the list below

four units shall be for the courses:

Elective courses
Students may select electives from the following courses without requiring the approval of the Program Coordinator. Any other choice of elective(s) must be approved by the Program Coordinator.
Students should note that the offering of elective courses is dependent upon the number of students enrolling in a course being at least 10. Students should enrol in the courses of their choice but will be informed as soon as practicable if any of these courses are not to be offered.

Clinical requirements
There are no clinical requirements in this program unless candidates select electives that contain a clinical requirement.

IT requirements
Students should visit the USQ Recommended Hardware and Recommended Software sites to check that their computers are capable of running the appropriate software and versions of Internet web browsers and to check the minimum and recommended standards for software.

Residential schools
Candidates enrolled in the project components of their program will be required to attend a compulsory residential school in the mid-semester break in Semester 1 of each year in which they are enrolled in the research component of their program. Under exceptional circumstances, the residential requirements will be varied if alternative strategies can be used to meet the objectives of the residential school.

Exemptions
Candidates must complete at least eight units of courses offered by USQ whilst enrolled in this program so at most four units of exemptions may be granted on the basis of appropriate study undertaken at USQ, other universities or the New South Wales College of Nursing.

Honours
Students who complete the requirements for the award of Master of Nursing (Honours) will be awarded Honours at one of four levels. These levels are: First Class Honours, Second Class Honours Division A, Second Class Honours Division B and Third Class Honours.
