Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment strategy

USQ is firmly committed to enhancing the educational, employment, training and career development opportunities for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people employed at the University.  We’re fostering a workplace that embraces and celebrates the unique place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and the valuable contribution they make to our University.  

Through our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Career Development and Employment Strategy, we seek to attract, recruit and retain Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples for both academic and professional roles across all areas of the University.  Our goal is to increase the employment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to 2.5% of our workforce. 

Our programs and initiatives

As part of the Strategy, we offer a number of programs and initiatives to help us deliver on our commitment:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traineeship Program

Through this twelve month Traineeship Program, participants are provided with rewarding opportunities to work within various USQ schools and sections on a full time basis and gain invaluable professional skills and experience.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student  Internship Program

The Student Internship Program is offered to current USQ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students undertaking an undergraduate degree.  Participants can secure an opportunity to work in an area of the University that complements their study.

Employee Network

Open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees regardless of their employment status, members of the Employee Network can:

  • receive peer support from members in relation to professional development and career advancement activities 
  • stay informed on relevant matters affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees
  • play an active role in reviewing activities / plans and making recommendations to relevant USQ authorities and committees

External initiatives

USQ encourages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people employed at the University to access any available externally funded professional development opportunities including:

  • The Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education funds Indigenous Staff Scholarships each year. For more information please visit the Indigenous Staff Scholarships website or contact the Department by email.

Connecting Cultures

We actively encourage our employees to engage in cultural learning opportunities to increase their understanding and appreciation of aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures and achievements.  Share our Pride is designed to take you on an awareness journey giving you a taste of traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures whilst learning about the shared history of Australia which is relative to our Reconciliation Action Plan 2015-2017.

Reconciliation Action Plan 2015-2017

The USQ Reconciliation Action Plan: Walking Together commits USQ to a range of actions and goals in support of securing unity between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.
