H3.2  Standard

The University has an obligation under the Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 2008 (Qld) (Hazardous Substances) to ensure that all substances are stored in compliance with this regulation.

H3.3 Procedures

H3.3.1 Overall responsibility for compound

USQSafe will maintain responsibility for the overall management of the Chemicals Store (Z5) and will be responsible for maintaining and controlling a register of all appointed and authorised persons.

H3.3.2 Appointment of authorised person/s

Each Faculty and Department will appoint and authorise a person/s to manage their allocated area, to ensure compliance with USQ procedures.

H3.3.3 Authorised entry to storage compound

No University employee is to enter the storage compound unaccompanied.  At least one of the persons must be the Authorised Person.

H3.3.4 MSDS register

Each Faculty and Department must keep a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) Register of all substances stored in the compound.  The Register is to be kept in the storage compound.

H3.3.5 Storage manifest

Each Faculty and Department must keep accurate records of the quantities of each substance stored in this compound.

H3.3.6 Labelling

Each Faculty and Department must ensure that all containers are correctly labelled as per the legal requirements.

H3.3.7 Waste storage

Each Faculty and Department must ensure that all waste substances are stored correctly in the designated areas.

All containers must be correctly labelled as per the legal requirements.

H3.3.8 Housekeeping

Spillage of any kind must be cleaned up immediately, using the provided spill kit. All spills must be reported to Supervisor and USQSafe immediately.  NOTE: Refer to Spill Response Procedure for further information.

Each Faculty and Department is to ensure that the compound is left in a clean and tidy state.

Containers, of any size, must not be stored in access ways.

All instances of untidiness are to be reported to the Manager, USQSafe for follow up attention.

H3.3.9 Training

Each Authorised Person/s, appointed by the Faculty and Department, must undertake the following training.

  • Storage compound orientation
  • ChemWatch database use
  • Emergency procedures training in the use of fire extinguishers and spill kit
