S1.2 Standard

The University has an obligation to minimise the incidence and severity of injuries to users of screen-based equipment by identifying and controlling any risks.

S1.3 Procedures

Category 4 Delegates or above will ensure that each cost centre is provided with appropriate education, equipment and other resources for the safe use of screen-based equipment.  Provisions will be made for the special needs of employees with disabilities.

S1.3.1 Prevention of strain or injury

Individual employees should make every effort to reduce the risk of strain or injury by following the recommendations in the USQSafe Fact Sheet: Workstation Ergonomics.

S1.3.2 Reporting strain or injury

An individual employee should report to their appropriate Supervisor any discomfort they experience (for example headaches or strains) or hazards they recognise (for example inappropriate furniture or poor lighting).

The Supervisor will assess the employee's concerns and take corrective action, which may include reviewing work practices, arranging education or providing appropriate equipment for safe use of screen-based equipment.

The Supervisor is responsible for undertaking risk assessments in their workplace.  The Workstation Setup Checklist has been developed for use in risk assessments.  Cost centres are encouraged to use this form or may contact USQSafe for advice.

Those hazards which cannot be immediately rectified should be reported to the Category 4 Delegate or above and USQSafe on the Hazard Report and Investigation Form.  (Refer to procedures for Section H1 - Hazard Reporting in this Manual.)

If an employee suffers injury, they must report the injury on the Incident Record/Report.  (Refer to procedures for Section I1 - Incident or Injury Reporting in this Manual.) The Category 4 Delegate or above must ensure the individual employee seeks medical advice immediately.
