Advertising

Summary:

All recruitment advertising must be arranged by Human Resources.  Recruitment to continuing and fixed term positions exceeding six months will be through advertisement.  Recruitment of a fixed term employee for a period of six months or less does not require advertisement.  However, faculties and sections are encouraged to contact Human Resources to arrange advertising to attract a suitable field of applicants.

All professional staff positions classified at USQ Levels 1 to 5 will normally be advertised internally within the University in the first instance.  However, where the recruiting faculty or section indicates they do not expect to attract suitable applicants from the internal pool, an appropriate external advertisement placement may be made.

Newspaper advertising will normally be restricted to one placement (ie. one newspaper only) for professional staff positions classified at USQ Level 5 and below, and two placements for USQ Level 6 and above and for academic positions.

Newspaper advertising normally takes place every three weeks, however Human Resources may initiate additional placements as required.  Advertising on the SEEK and Unijob websites and USQ website is offered bi-weekly.  Faculties and sections may also nominate selected specialist/industry and overseas websites on which to place advertisements after consideration of cost.   Employees are encouraged to email position vacancy information to professional networks through the use of external email distribution lists, on the condition that approval for costs is gained in advance from the relevant delegate.  Advertisements may also be placed on the ATEM website at no cost.

Advertising Audience ...

It is essential to remember the intended audience when deciding where to advertise positions and in determining position details such as the position title. For example, a position title of ‘Administration Officer – Technical Services’ is less likely to attract suitable applicants for a highly technical information technology position, and therefore may attract a more appropriate audience if it were called ‘Technical Officer – Network Administration’ etc.

Most applicants for positions at USQ indicate they first saw the vacancy on USQ’s own website, followed by other job boards such as SEEK. Newspaper advertisements do however still attract a number of candidates.
