Induction

Summary:

All new employees to the University will participate in an induction programme to assist them to adjust to their new responsibilities and work environment.

Induction normally consists of completing an online equal opportunity module, an online safety induction module (or onsite briefing as appropriate to the role) and a USQ Corporate online induction.  Academic employees are also required to complete an appropriate learning and teaching induction program.

The employing faculty or section must also provide a new employee with an appropriate work area induction.  The Faculty/Section will ensure that new employees receive guidance and instruction regarding operating requirements which relate to their duties and will sign off the completion of the work area induction program and return the Induction Checklist to Human Resources.   Human Resources will store the documentation on the employee's personal file.

Safety induction programs must be completed annually, with the EO online program refreshed every two years.

Induction facts:

  • Employee induction provides the employee with their first impression of USQ and will affect how quickly they become a productive member of our organisation.
  • Fostering positive attitudes from day 1 will lead to increased motivation and commitment.
  • In the case of school leavers, graduates or people returning to the workforce, all of whom may not have recent 'permanent' work experience, it helps them to adjust quickly to a major change in their lives and to achieve an effective work/life balance.
  • It reduces turnover rates caused by new employees who either fail to adjust quickly or who take an early dislike of the job or organisation.
  • It ensures that the organisation complies with various legal obligations that cover employees.
  • It provides 'public relations' benefits from promoting the organisation – for example, an employee impressed by his/her choice of employer may advertise the fact and make it easier to attract other applicants.
  • Some recent research shows that 70% of people decide in the first 3 days whether they will stay with an organisation or not (even though they might take 12-18 months to actually leave) therefore the induction and onboarding an employee receives is critical.
  • An induction checklist has been developed for Managers and Supervisors to complete which will assist with the smooth transition of new employees into the work area.
