How to Print

The printing system allows for the correct amount to be deducted from your printing quota each time you print.

Page Size

The page size must be set to A4 for laser printers. Failure to do so will cause one of the following to happen:

  • The print station will reject the print job and will display an error message 'Unmatched job attributes. Print: Unable to select Printer'.
  • The printer will halt and hold up all other jobs. The symptoms are:
  • the On-line light on the printers is out.
  • the Form Feed light is on.
  • the message displayed is 'UC Load Letter'.
If these symptoms occur, click on the Continue button and correct your document setup so that other people can use the printer.
  • Open the file to be printed.
  • Choose File>Print from the menu.
  • Click on the Properties button.

Select Long Sides in the Print on Both Sides (Duplex Printing) Area.

Duplex Printing

Duplex printing prints on both sides of the page. This feature reduces the number of pages that print out and also reduces the cost of printing. This style of printing is recommended for lecture notes.

Before using this technique to print assignments check with your lecturer to see if it is acceptable.

Printing PowerPoint

Lecture notes for some subjects are stored as PowerPoint presentations. Check with your Lecturer if there are lecture notes in PowerPoint format and where they are stored. Instructions on How to Print and View PowerPoint (PDF* 129 kb) are available. These instructions outline how to upload, view and search for student web pages.

Finding your Printer Output

The 'flag page' printed before every job displays the user name, the number of pages, the cost of this job and the balance of the user's account. The flag page is not included in the page count and no charge is made for this page.

Printing Queues

The printing system is divided into two parts.

1.  Sending Print Jobs to the Print Hold Queue

To print you first need to print the document from the application you are in. Your print job is then sent to a spool queue where the job is held until you release it from the Pharos system.

2.  Sending Print Jobs to the Printing Queue

If you have any error messages when printing, check that the paper size in the program you are printing from is set to A4.

To release a job from Pharos

  • Select Pharos Remote from the Start menu
  • Then you need to log onto the system, click on Printing and click the spool queue you selected when initially printing the document.
  • Next, click on the document and click on the print icon.
  • The job will now print.

Note:   Print jobs will remain on the Print Hold Queue for up to one hour. In this time jobs may be printed or deleted. Print jobs will automatically be deleted after the hour.
