Genuine Student (GS), Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) & Financial Information

The following information is provided to assist you to understand the SVP assessment processes adopted by the University of Southern Queensland. This information should be read in conjunction with the University’s Admissions Policy Statement.

Background information

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) introduced the Streamlined Visa Processing (SVP) in March 2012 to assist students applying for a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Research degree in their visa applications and with the aim of improving the integrity of the visa application process.  There are three parts to the SVP process for the University to consider: a) whether you are a genuine student; b) whether you are a genuine temporary entrant; and c) whether you have the financial capacity to pay for your tuition and living costs for yourself and any accompanying dependants for the time you are studying.

The GTE assessment, along with the existing GS program, addresses whether your individual circumstances sufficiently support your intention to travel to, and remain in Australia on a temporary basis in order to achieve a successful educational outcome.

More information on Student Visas and GTE/GS assessment can be found on the DIAC website.

In order for you to apply for a Student Visa, the University needs to satisfy itself that you are a Genuine Student (GS), a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) to Australia, and have the capacity to pay for your costs. Information regarding GTE requirements is available on the DIAC website.  However, the final decision whether to grant you a  Student Visa is made by the Australian Government’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

Your Genuine Student status is determined by assessing your application and supporting documents, such as those shown below, against the entry requirements for the program you are applying to study:

  • evidence of English language proficiency
  • academic career and
  • employment/professional registration

Further information on USQ’s entry requirements can be located on the Apply page.

Determining Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) status

Before we begin assessing your application, you will undergo an initial screening process which will help us to determine if you satisfy DIAC’s Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criteria. This will occur before we begin assessing whether you meet USQ’s entry requirements.

This screening process may require you to complete the USQ Direct GTE/GS evaluation form and to speak with a USQ representative who will contact you to ask you a series of questions in relation to your responses on the USQ Direct GTE/GS evaluation form.

The documents that you submit as part of this process must be certified written copies. If your original documents are not written in English, a certified English translation should also be submitted.

Your GTE assessment results are confidential and remain USQ’s exclusive property. Unless required by law, we are not obliged to disclose or provide a copy of your assessment to:

  • you
  • any educational institution
  • other third parties

USQ, at its sole discretion, can disclose GTE assessment results to our nominated business partners.

We may also apply the GTE assessment process for all deferred applications if there has been a change in your circumstances between lodging your application and the GTE assessments taking place.

Following SVP assessment, ie GTE/GS/Financial:

  • If the University is satisfied that you meet the GTE/GS/Financial requirements, the SVP assessment will remain valid for up to 2 years (at USQ’s discretion) from the date of the assessment.
  • If the University is NOT satisfied that you meet SVP requirements, you will be ineligible for admission to USQ for a period of up to 2 years (at USQ’s discretion) from the date of the assessment.

Withdrawal of an offer of admission

USQ reserves the right to withdraw your offer of admission and may, at its discretion, not consider any further applications for admission for a period of up to 2 years if:

  • you fail to complete required assessment in your program of study or we determine that you are not a genuine temporary entrant/genuine student
  • we later determine or reasonably suspect that the information or documentation you or your representative supplied was incorrect
  • you were NOT initially required to complete a GTE/GS assessment prior to obtaining your offer but are later required to complete the assessment (at USQ’s discretion) and do not complete the assessment or complete the assessment and fail to demonstrate that you are a GTE/GS and/or have the necessary financial capacity to pay your costs while in Australia.

If DIAC refuse to grant you a student visa, you will be ineligible for admission to the University for a period of 2 years (at USQ’s discretion) from the date of the DIAC refusal.
