My name is Kris Lyon and I am the Departmental Support Officer with the Department of Mathematics and Computing, Faculty of Sciences. I have been working at USQ for 3 years and have wanted to work at USQ since I moved to Toowoomba. I love mixing with interesting people and being surrounded by learning and knowledge. I am fascinated by the huge amount of activity and the variety of research interests of staff and students.
In my career I have always helped people in one way or another. In my current role, I assist the academic employees and students to achieve their goals. One of the best parts of my job is the people I work with, both academic employees and the people in my wider administration team. We all come from different cultures and backgrounds, but we all want to help students on their educational journey. I have found USQ is very community oriented and I have made some wonderful friends already in my time here. Coffee time is pretty good too!
I also appreciate that I am given a variety of tasks. Anything could present itself at any time, and it usually does! No day is ever the same – but I am always allowed to tell jokes on Fridays.
Last year I organised a party in my department for the First World Statistics Day. I had a cake made with a Pie Graph as the decoration and added to the theme with balloons with statistics symbols. It was a great event and employees and students really enjoyed the fun on the day (any excuse for a party!).
I appreciate that there are many internal career and development opportunities at USQ. My faculty offers a professional development allowance and last year I attended a conference, which was excellent.
I am a member of the USQ Women’s Network which I love; to hear professional and academic women tell their stories is very inspiring and often heartening. USQ has lots of interest groups (some more formal than others) and as I have a keen interest in art, I sometimes go the art exhibitions in my lunchbreaks. I have attended several art exhibition openings and concerts that are held on campus – fabulous resources to have so very close. I also visit the library, the Japanese Gardens and am a member of a Bollywood dancing team!
