I am the Administration Coordinator (Academic Support/Assessment) in the Faculty of Business and Law. I have been working at USQ for seven years. My role involves a broad range of tasks including policy implementation and advice, student and academic support, and supervising a team.
After 12 years in the Hotel industry at various levels of management I was looking for a different career path and applied for contract work at USQ. Three contracts and nine months later I was fortunate to be appointed as an Assessments Officer within the Faculty of Business and Law. I held this position for four years and have since progressed to the Coordinator’s role which I have held for the past three years.
My supervisor provided me with great mentoring and professional development opportunities from the outset. The commitment and investment in me combined with the diversity of tasks and people are the selling points for me in wanting to maintain a career at USQ.
There have been many highlights but the ones that stand out each semester are the moments when you are able to provide positive solutions to students when they are in a stressed and vulnerable state of mind. The look of relief and gratitude given is what makes the job satisfying. This is the same as when providing new academics with a level of support that they weren’t used to from their previous institution. I have a great team who put words into action.
Other highlights for me include professional development training in Sydney where I participated in the “Moving into Management” workshop facilitated by the LH Martin Institute at Macquarie University, as well as receiving a number of service and collegiality awards voted by my peers.
