Maths Assessment

  1. Look over the entire exam, ask yourself
    • How long is the exam and how much time is allowed?
    • Which questions can you do?
    • Which questions will you have to think about?

  2. Start with the questions you can do, then return to the ones you have to think about.  They do not have to be done in order as long as you clearly label each question according to its number.  Good idea to start a new question on a new page if using an exam booklet.

  3. Make sure you read the questions carefully, and attempt all parts of each problem.

  4. Work as quickly and continuously as you can while still writing legibly.

  5. Work by the clock. On a 50 minute, 100 point test, you have about 5 minutes for a 10 point question. Starting with the easy questions will probably put you ahead of the clock. When you work on a harder question, spend the allotted time (eg 5 minutes) on that question, and if you have not almost finished it, go on to another problem. Do not spend 20 minutes on a problem which will yield few or no points when there are other problems still to try.

  6. Show all your working.  If your answer is incorrect, the marker might give part marks based on the work you have included.

  7. Mental block?  Relax, breathe deeply and use positive self talk.  If necessary leave the question and return to it later.

  8. Never waste time erasing! Just draw a line through the work you want ignored and move on. Erasing wastes time and  you might find something that might be useful later (and/or maybe worth part marks if you cannot complete the problem).

  9. In a multiple-step problem outline the steps before actually working on the problem. Don't give up on a question with multiple parts just because you can't do the first part. Attempt the other part(s)  or at least explain how you would do them.

  10. Check  your answers
    • Does each answer make sense given the context of the question?
    • Have you got the calculations and/or algebra correct etc?
    • If you finish early, check that you have answered all the questions and check for errors.
