Lecture - Integrating work knowledge within the curriculum

From the University's perspective the knowledge required for work and employability is often seen as an applied version of the 'pure' knowledge learned by students within the University with added employability skills. Working knowledge produced through practice in offices, industry, research centres, etc is produced in the context in which it is use, is trans-disciplinary, messy and complex and often contested, as rarely is there an authoritative source to define it. It is learned through "situated" activities and to be work ready students need to experience this, the place where discovery and learning are not separated. Integrating work knowledge within the curriculum suggests some familiar and some new pedagogic practices. Based on his experiences in the development of work-based learning degrees for adult learners at Foundation, Bachelors and Masters levels Frank will illustrate some work integrating approaches to learning, teaching and assessment.
