Carrick 2007 recipients


Senior Lecturer in communication in the Faculty of Arts, Dr Jill Lawrence, received a Carrick Award for Australian University Teaching in the Humanities and the Arts Category for her contributions to students' learning, with a specific focus on first year communication courses. A passionate educator with more than thirty years of teaching experience, Dr Lawrence received the award for her commitment to maintaining open dialogue between teachers and students and allowing both parties to question, reflect, participate and create meaning.

The USQ Engineering Problem Solving Strand team
, led by Lyn Brodie, won in the Innovation in Curricula, Learning and Teaching Category of the Carrick Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning. The award recognised the team's cutting edge implementation of four courses in engineering and surveying which use problem-based learning in virtual mode. Other members of the winning team included Associate Professor Thiru Aravinthan, Associate Professor Mark Porter, Associate Professor John Worden, Peter Gibbings, Paul Fahey and Dr Jeff Sabburg.

The USQ Outreach Services team, led by Suzanne Milroy, won in the Services Supporting Student Learning Category of the Carrick Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning. USQ Outreach Services provides a range of student support services and systems to encourage student networks, to meet individual needs of students, and to promote communication between USQ staff and students. The award recognised the important role that non-academic staff play in the student learning journey and also recognised the critical and unique support systems developed by Outreach Services.

Carrick citations for outstanding contributions to student learning

Five individuals and teams from USQ were also awarded Carrick Citations for outstanding contributions to student learning in 2007.

Associate Professor Alfio Parisi, Faculty of Sciences, was cited for the development of curricula and imaginative resources that enhance life-long undergraduate and postgraduate learning in Physics for on-campus and distance education students.

The DeC Outreach Services team, led by Suzanne Milroy, was cited for contextualised use of technology and personal interaction to provide a consistent, sustainable and integrated University-wide approach to support the student learning journey.

Associate Professor Janet Taylor and Linda Galligan, LTSU, were cited for a decade of leadership and exemplary practice in evidence-based curriculum development for mathematics learning support for USQ students studying on- and off-campus.

Professor Jim Taylor, DVC(GLS), was cited for 25 years of sustained leadership in enhancing the quality of open and distance learning in higher education, both in Australia and internationally.

The LTSU Tertiary Preparation Program team, led by David Bull, was cited for 18 years contribution to the rehabilitation of offenders in custody through the provision of a higher education access program by distance education.
