Assessment of learning
The focus on assessment of learning highlights one key function of assessment in higher education, which is the certification of particular forms and standards of student learning.
Assessment of student learning enables programs to assure the attainment of professional accreditation requirements.
Assessment is also the means by which students demonstrate course learnng objectives and whether they have attained the appropriate standard of learning to progress in their degree program.
The focus of assessment of learning emphasises issues of validity and reliability.
Valid assessment provides the examiner with evidence of the type of learning described in course objectives.
Reliable assessment is applied consistently and fairly to all students. The use of marking criteria, rubrics and moderation processes will tend to improve the reliability of assessment tasks.
