Basic search

Use a Browse Search when you know the author, title, call number or subject heading.

Note: Journal articles are not found in the library catalogue. Only journal titles can be searched in the library catalogue - not the title of a journal article.

To conduct a Browse search follow the steps below:

  1. From the drop down box, select the Search Type (e.g. author, title, call number).
  2. Type the details into the search box. Ignore punctuation. Omit  A or AN or THE from the beginning of a title.
  3. Click on Start Search.
  4. From the list provided select the record you require.

The item catalogue record will tell you the resource's:

  • location - for example, Toowoomba Main Collection
  • status - whether it is available for loan, for example, Available
  • call number - where it is on the shelf, or if it is an online resource - the URL link

Click on More Details Record for more information such as subject headings and for some resources - chapter headings.

What if the resource you want is already on loan?

  • if the status of the resource has a due date then this resource is already on loan
  • you can place a request by clicking on the REQUEST box and entering your details
  • you will be notified when it is returned to the library
  • or you can find other resources on the same subject by clicking on the subject headings of the resource you originally wanted
  • subject headings are hyperlinks to other resources sharing the same subject headings.

Search using Subject Headings

  • Browse search also allows you to search for resources by their subject headings
  • subject headings are specific words used by the library to describe the content of each resource
  • examples of subject headings used in the catalogue are: Communication; Tourism; Psychology; Bridges; Wounds.
