Using EndNote
Basic use of EndNote
EndNote X5 is now available for those using MS Office 2010. It is compatible with Windows XP and Windows 7. It also works with Vista.
Classes using EndNote X5 begin in February, 2012. An EndNote Introduction and an EndNote Jam Session (for those who have attended the Introduction) are two types of class offered to students and staff throughout the year. If you are not able to attend a class you can download the class workbook (PDF 2MB) and work through it independently, or you can use one of the very useful tutorials available on the ISI Thomson Reuters website/ These demonstrations are provided via the Thomson site or their YouTube EndNote Training site.
IMPORTANT: When downloading any file to your computer it is very important that you take note of the name of the file
the file extension (eg. .enl, .enz, .ens, .enlx)
the location/folder/place you will save it on your computer
To save the files below, in Safari, choose Download Linked File NOT Download Linked File As... If you notice any additional letters, such as ashx please delete them as they will render the file inoperable.

Referencing or Output Styles
EndNote has over 100 referencing or output styles for you to choose from including APA 6th, however, it does not include the USQ standard Harvard AGPS 6. If they do not appear in your optoin for styles or online search, we have provided you with them here for download.
Referencing or output styles
Please note: Save any of these files into the relevant folder (ie. Styles or Connections) using this path - C:\Users\username\Documents\EndNote\Styles
- Download Harvard AGPS6. Save this file into a folder using this path if you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7- C:\Users\username\MyDocuments\EndNote\Styles. NOTE: You may have to create the folder for EndNote and then its subfolder Styles. For Windows XP - C:\Program Files\EndNote\Styles. For a Mac -Applications\EndNote
- Download the Australian Guide to Legal Citation (AGLC) follow the same procedure as for Harvard AGPS6
Search you library's catalogue directly via your EndNote Library
Search the USQ Library catalogue via EndNote to import the records instantly.
- Download the USQ connection file. Save this file into a folder using this path if you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7 - C:\Users\username\MyDocuments\EndNote\Connections. NOTE: You may have to create the folder for EndNote and then its subfolder Connections. For Windows XP - C:\Program Files\EndNote\Connections. For a Mac -Applications\EndNote
A list of more connection files relevant to Australian students and researchers can be found at the University of Queensland's website. If you would like to see all the EndNote connection files, go to Thomson ResearchSoft EndNote.
To search UQ or other libraries via EndNote, go to EndNote's Downloads page and follow the directions to choose as many other connection files as you like to download to your EndNote program.
Direct import of references from a database into EndNote
You can import references you find in many of the Library's online databases directly into EndNote. Most databases offer export into EndNote, while others require you to use a filter (special file written to read and write data from one location to another). For those databases that do not have direct export check the University of Queensland's EndNote Filters page. To make this process of direct import more effective you can enter this web address http://ezproxy.usq.edu.au/login in your EndNote preferences. Go to EndNote Edit/Preferences/Find Full Text and copy the address in the previous sentence into the URL box. Save.
Saving your EndNote library
You should save at least one back up copy of your library in a different location for security of data (eg., at the office, on an external hard drive). To save your library, Go to File/Compressed Library and follow the prompts. If you choose save a copy you should note that an EndNote library comprises a .data file and a .enl file. These two must be saved in the same location. They save automatically together, but should some corruption of your computer data occur they have been known to be separated, rendering your Library inoperable. The safest option therefore is to always save the library or update it as a compressed file.
Share your EndNote library
