Research into land use has changed dramatically in recent times.  Traditional methods based on maximising a single land or resource use without understanding the full range of impacts have been replaced by more integrated approaches.  These bring together different disciplines that work across spatial and temporal scales, that aim to understand environmental, social and economic benefits and risks, and that work with communities, industry and government.  The goals of these new approaches is firstly to better understand environmental problems and the associated social and economic vulnerabilities that result, and secondly to design new systems for providing more sustainable approaches to land and resource use.

The Land Use Research Centre is a University recognised cluster of research and education activities based around developing multidisciplinary and integrated approaches to sustainable resource management.  The activities of the Centre are built around collaborative ventures with other researchers, policy and management professionals, the community and through its graduate students.
