Study the Face in Clay

Tutor in Residence

Kate French from Mount Tamborine

  Gladys

Kate French is a highly skilled portrait sculptor who has been exhibiting and teaching this style of sculpture for nearly two decades. In recent years she has had a primary focus on education and sharing her unique sculpture techniques with students from a wide range of ages, skill levels and aspirations. Novices, artists and teachers attend her workshops for skill enhancement and professional development.

In her personal arts practice, Kate’s main interest lies in portraying the much older female. These works are empowering for the viewer, and show her subjects in a compassionate, but humorous light. It is for these works that Kate is best known, and in which she continues to take the greatest pleasure in creating.

Class Synopsis

Kate has taken her love for, and fascination with, the human face and developed a sculpting method that makes it easy for anyone with the desire to learn it, able to do so.

Whether you are a complete novice, or are an artist visiting from another medium or method, this workshop will freshen your creative perspective. You will see familiar forms and expression in a fresh, uncluttered way. Coupled with Kate’s simple and direct sculpting method you will get results, reliably and quickly.

This is a demonstration rich workshop, buoyed by personal tuition for each participant. Individual studies of each of the facial features, interjected at appropriate times during the workshop, will give you confidence to then recreate them onto your major work.
