Andrew MacDonald is a sculptor and designer who has several public art commission in South East Queensland. He works in timber and metal, and has a passion for recycling materials and found objects. Of special interest is kinetic art. Andrew has a wide-ranging trade background, with experience in mechanics, metal fabrication and furniture making, and combines these skills with an Honours degree in Creative Arts. He has demonstrated in sculpture for the Visual Arts department at USQ for over 15years; run art workshops for Flying Arts Inc., Woodford Folk Festival and many other schools and art groups throughout Queensland. Andrew has exhibited nationally and internationally, including works selected by Craft Australia at SOFA Exhibition in Chicago 2001. His work is represented in numerous private collections, the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery and the Queensland State Library. Andrew is currently the Production Manager with Artsworx where he designs and builds sets and props for theatre.
This class will be a 3D construction/assemblage workshop using recycled materials and found objects. It will be broad-ranging with regard to materials and therefore the techniques required to work with them.
Andrew will cover:
Basic woodwork techniques for box making. This may require the use of power tools (the option remains for students to use hand tools only)
Basic metalwork techniques to join metals, like pop riveting, wire work and mig welding.
Selection and arrangement of found objects, focussing on formal issues of design and visual manipulation\
Technical concerns, including structure and strength, as well as WHS considerations of recycled media.
Intermediate to advanced
Estimated materials cost: up to $100 - $200, depending on tools already owned plus $20 fee payable to the tutor to cover the communal use of tools. An materials list will be sent on enrolment or you may contact the office to request a copy of one for your perusal.
