Oil Painting with Colour and Light *
Tutor in Residence
Maxwell Wilks from Melbourne
Maxwell worked in Graphic Arts before studying drawing at the National Gallery School and Commercial Design at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He has painted full time since 1982 working in oil and pastel, with 47 one man exhibitions to his credit. A Fellow of the Victorian Artists Society in Melbourne, he was also council member and chairman of the Twenty Melbourne Painters Society for seven years. Maxwell taught at the Victorian Artists Society for 16 years teaching oil painting from life, and has also conducted tours for painters to the UK and Europe. He is represented in: Modern Oil Impressionism by Ron Ranson, the Australian Impressionist and Realist Artists compiled by Tom Roberts and the Artist and Galleries of Australia and New Zealand by Max Germain. Maxwell has chosen to follow the representational style of painting because of his strong emotional response to the effects of light, colour, atmosphere and form.
This class will help students to acquire new painting skills and the enjoyment of painting with oil paint. An introduction and discussion of materials, paint application and design will be held at the beginning of the first session. The class will involve painting directly from the landscape and from the model together with material that Max will supply.
Students will learn about observation and how to interpret what they observe, and use that skill in their painting. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the use of light, color and tone. The course will include demonstrations by the tutor. Students will experience painting in the studio involving four sessions of painting the model and will be painting the landscape on location.
