Course Synopsis

This workshop is designed to provide a broad overview of archaeology as a discipline with a particular focus on our local, national and international region. The two day workshop will include a broad overview of archaeological methods and techniques, including an outline of the different kinds of archaeology and different approaches before focussing on the ‘prehistory’ of our region with a particular emphasis on Australia and Papua New Guinea. The presentation will be supported by extensive visual material from excavations carried out in Australia and Papua New Guinea. The second day of the workshop will include an introduction to practical laboratory analysis (no prior science required) in which participants will be actively involved in the preliminary sorting, identification and preliminary analysis of an actual archaeological site.
