Denis Clarke, Sydney

 

Denis Clarke is a lecturer at the National Art School in Sydney. He is represented by the Harris Courtin Gallery in Sydney and James Colman Gallery in London, having spent many years exhibiting and teaching in the UK. His work is characterised by expressive use of colour, movement and intense drawing from everyday subjects, urban landscape, figure and still life. He is also a regular tutor at the Mitchell School, Charles Sturt University, and has been a guest artist at the Cooee Bay artist camp in Queensland. He has been the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Cité International des Arts in Paris, studio residency and the NSW Travelling Arts Scholarship and is represented in major collections, including Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney, Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University UK, and Lloyds of London.

Course Synopsis

This course concentrates in depth on exercises that have been developed by Denis over his extensive teaching and studio practice. You will be encouraged to take risks while you experiment and expand your creative decision making. We will be work mainly from the life model.

 We will be particularly looking at working from the figure as a living and moving phenomena of nature. Creative strategies of dealing with form and space will be discussed. Also a fluid means of assessing proportion will be encouraged . Particular attention will be put on using the sense of touch and free invention of mark to register observation and build structure. Ideas developed in these sessions will be applied to larger-scale mixed media work on paper.
