Mixed Media Encaustic Painting

Artist in Residence

Mo Godbeer, Sydney godbeer

Mo was born in England and moved to Australia in 1987; she now lives and works in Sydney. A contemporary artist working in encaustic, mixed media and photography, Mo incorporates many diverse items into her works, including papers, photography, found objects and fibres. Her paintings reflect our relationship with nature and the passage of time, incorporating the ideas of perceived memory. Mo has a diploma of Fine Arts from Hornsby Technical and Further Education Institute, and has exhibited in shows in Sydney, London and the US. Her work hangs in galleries and private collections in Australia, the UK, New Zealand and the USA. Mo conducts regular small workshops at her home studio and larger workshops by request throughout Australia.  She also has a strong online following, running several online encaustic groups. In 2012 she has been invited to the US by Joanne Matters to present at the sixth International Encaustic Conference on the state of encaustic in Australia.

Course Synopsis

Students will gain an understanding of the encaustic process with many and varied techniques. There will be discussion and information on health, safe work practices, and a history of this art practice. Studio set up will be discussed and everything one would need to know to begin working with encaustic. Each day will be built upon from the previous, with the first day covering the basics and safety and history.

The next day the students will be drip fed the new techniques one by one and given time to try all of these techniques out on their own with assistance if required. These include: image transfer, collage, line and edge, embedding, scraping, crackle surfaces, rusting, drawing with encaustic pen, surface preparation, pouring, dipping, etching and more exciting techniques.

The workshop will include paper and fibres that many students may already work with but also to challenge them to move to different areas and with different styles.  It will be fun, supportive and exciting, so that students walk away with a feeling of achievement and some level of mastery over the process.
