Enamelling with Basse Taille and Cloisonne Techniques

rymanTutor in Residence

Barbara Ryman, Tahmoor

Enamelling has been the central medium of Barbara Ryman’s thirty years as a jeweller and enamel artist. She has exhibited widely; her work is in collections in Australia and overseas. She has received many awards, particularly in Japan. This has enabled her to study in Nagoya with her mentor and teacher, Mr Sakurai, since 2005. She loves learning and teaching, and says “We become the repositories of knowledge that is passed from the deepest past into the future. Enamel is an amazingly flexible medium and it’s very exciting to explore the possibilities”. Her work utilises both traditional and experimental techniques.

Class Synopsis

Working with a fine silver base, you will texture it to create a Basse Taille foundation for your enamel work.  Hammers, letter stamps, punches and such will be used to make your designs. Overlay these textures with silver cloisonne wires in patterns that will complement and contracts with the underlying pattern.

Medium to pale transparent enamels will show your textured metal beautifully. Use an accent of an opaque colour in some of your cloisons to create a contrasting design floating on a base of textural delight.

Making two items, you will learn metal texturing and preparation; washing, applying, shading transparent enamels; firing and finishing techniques to create a glowing jewel that will be set in simple and attractive 'ready to go' brooch settings.

Materials

Estimated material cost $200.00 plus for metal and tools. Experienced students should have most of the equipment. The materials list contains a list of suggested materials to bring.
