Tutor in Residence: Rebecca Berrett
Materials to be supplied by the student
General
• Water tub – ice cream container is ideal
• Saucer (for glue)
• Pencils, rubber, ruler, sharpener
• Scissors, calculator, glue stick
• Stanley knife/craft knife with fresh blade
• Dinner knife or folding knife
• Roll of thin masking tape
• Notebook
• Rags, apron
• Photocopy or cartridge paper – for roughing out, designing and calculating on
For the Binding
• 2 x sheets Stonehenge paper, colour of your choice. Available at art suppliers
• 1 x sheet strawboard, the thickest you can get. (Printers or art suppliers. One of the sheets to be used as a cutting mat, the other is for your book cover.)
• 50cm's coloured ribbon or string, thick wool or similar for book ties
• 1 x bottle Triton Premium Woodworking Adhesive. Minimum needed 250ml. (Available Bunnings Hardware or similar, separate power tools section)
• Old square-tipped bristle brushes for gluing, several sizes. (Spotlight, Crazy Clarks and Sam's Warehouse stock these very cheaply if purchasing new.)
• Thin leather if you wish to bind your book in leather. Bookcloth is also suitable (available from printers) or medium weight fabric, or papers (fancy, decorated, rice or even gift wrapping paper).
• Paperweights and/or bookends if you have any – don't purchase especially!
For the Artwork
• Art media of your choice. Any or all of the following are possibilities: pen and ink, graphite, watercolour, coloured pencils, crayons, pastels – oil or dry, gouache, acrylics, stamps and stamp pads, charcoal, collage materials: fabrics, found objects, magazine cutouts, rubbings (frottage), photos, sketches etc.
• Brushes and water tub if painting
• Kneadable eraser if using charcoal or pastels.
• Extra glue if collaging
• Any reference material needed
• Any copyright cleared piece of text you wish to include in your book
Coffee mug – tea, coffee, milk and sugar are not supplied by the School. Classes pool funds to buy supplies for the week which can be stored in the Tea Room provided. Please note that students are responsible for keeping their allocated tea room clean and tidy.
Estimated material cost: Depends on materials required for your particular project
IMPORTANT: All electrical equipment required for your class at USQ must be ‘tag-tested' by a qualified electrician prior to arrival to comply with safety rules. eg: extension cords, hair dryers etc.
HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES AND MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS
If you bring any hazardous substance to the McGregor School, could you please ensure that you obtain a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) from the supplier or obtain one from the manufacturer of this substance.
To do this, either ask the supplier from whom you purchase the hazardous substance, or read the contact details on the hazardous substance and contact the manufacturer and ask for a MSDS). Once you have obtained the MSDS, bring it with you to the school, and hand in a copy to the McGregor School office and or the Tutor.
Hazardous substance can be: e.g. solvents, acids, some paint and glues, chemicals, fixatives, fluxes and solders.
If you are unsure, the Supplier and or manufacturer should be able to inform you if the substance is classed as hazardous.
