An Introduction to Cloisonne Enamelling

It is essential that you bring –
AA fine point tweezers
Small manicure or medical scissors
Jewellers pliers, flat fine point
Files for metal – needle and/or larger flat or half round jewellers saw and blades
Bench pin and clamp
Glass brush (optional)
Coarse diamond file – needle or Ezilap (available from hardware stores)
Imitation sable brushes, sizes 2, 1 and 0
Small plastic or glass jar for water
Plastic ice-cream tub
Roll of paper towel
Old bath towel
2 x 6" square stainless steel mesh (from Anna Margot Originals or can be purchased from the tutor)
Drawing paper, pencil and eraser
Notebook
As this work is very fine and close, magnifiers or stronger glasses may be needed.
Materials
NB it is essential that pure silver, not sterling silver be used in this workshop for all enamelling.
You will need:
Pure silver sheet, 0.7mm at least 75mm x 150mm
Pure silver cloisonné wire, 0.8mm x .15mm, at least 3 m in length
Copper sheet, 1mm at least 10 cm square (working on copper is optional)
For those without jewellery making skills, a few pre-made round pendant bezels and blanks will be available from tutor.

Some tools will be able to be purchased from Australian Jewellers Supplies stall on the first day of the workshop. The tutor will have small quantities of metal available. Brushes, paper, notebooks and pencils are available to purchase on campus.
Enamels
A full range of enamels can be purchased from the tutor at cost price, though participants may bring their own. It is recommended that only lead-bearing enamels be used in this workshop. (Please note that Thompson brand enamels are lead free). Old and unlabelled enamels are not suitable for making beautiful jewellery.

Covered-in shoes must be worn in all workshops
Coffee mug – tea, coffee, milk and sugar are not supplied by the School. Classes pool funds to buy supplies for the week which can be stored in the Tea Room provided. Please note that students are responsible for keeping their allocated tea room clean and tidy.
Estimated materials cost: It is difficult to estimate how much enamel will be used by each student during the workshop, but the total cost should not exceed $60.00.
A kit of a small quantity of each of 10 enamel colours will be available at the workshop at a cost of $20.00. Other colours can be purchased as needed, and unwanted colours may be swapped or returned for a refund.
Pots for washing enamel will also be available at nominal cost.
IMPORTANT: All electrical equipment required for your class at USQ must be ‘tag-tested' by a qualified electrician prior to arrival in order to comply with Commonwealth Government safety rules. Items include: extension cords, all power tools etc.
WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY – IMPORTANT!!
If you bring any hazardous substance to the McGregor School, could you please ensure that you obtain a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) from the supplier or obtain one from the manufacturer of this substance.
To do this, either ask the supplier from whom you purchase the hazardous substance, or read the contact details on the hazardous substance and contact the manufacturer and ask for a MSDS). Once you have obtained the MSDS, bring it with you to the school, and hand in a copy to the McGregor School office and or the Tutor.
Hazardous substance can be: e.g. solvents, acids, some paint and glues, chemicals, fixatives, fluxes and solders.
If you are unsure, the Supplier and or manufacturer should be able to inform you if the substance is classed as hazardous.
