Creative Knitting and Crochet with Embellishments

Tutor in Residence: Jenny Dowde

Materials to be supplied by the student:

  • A selection of yarns in a colour scheme of your choice.  Bring a variety of textures and thicknesses including two or three plain smooth yarns (8 ply).  You only need one ball or part ball of each yarn.
  • Knitting needles – sizes 4.5mm, 5mm, 6 mm
  • 2 double pointed needles size 3.5 mm
  • Crochet hooks – sizes 4.5mm, 5mm, 6 mm
  • Beading needles – size 1- - 13 (these are usually sold in a pack of 6)
  • Sewing needle – the eye needs to be large enough to carry 4 ply or perle cotton
  • Wool needle – for assembling knit and crocheted fragments
  • 5cm long ‘Big Eye' needle – available at beading shops
  • Scissors
  • A selection of beads to compliment your overall colour scheme.  You will need a mix of seed bead sizes – size 11°, size 8°, size 6°, some slightly larger accent beads no bigger than 4mm or 5mm in diameter, bugle beads, and any other shaped beads that you may have in your stash – just nothing too big.  You can sometimes buy a mixed selection of beads called Bead Soup and Bead Gravy in craft stores or online bead shops which may make things easier for you.
  • Beading thread – preferably Nymo size D in a colour to compliment your bead colour – this is easily available online or in bead shops
  • Small amounts of fabric, preferably easy to rip and nothing too heavy.  For example hand-dyed silk, hand-dyed gimp, organza etc.  Again, the fabric should compliment your overall colour scheme.
  • One or two metallic threads – approx 3 or 4 ply similar to those used in embroidery
  • Any embroidery threads that you may have – 3 or 4 ply variegated perle cotton is good or a similar crochet cotton, DMC or Anchor threads of your choice.  These should compliment your overall colour scheme.

OPTIONAL:  If you have needle felting tools (and wool tops in a suitable colour range) then please bring them
