Watercolour - Yes Please!

Materials to be supplied by the student
Paper: 3 - 4 sheets of Arches, Saunders or Bockingford Medium 300g cold pressed/medium texture or rough watercolour paper each. Approx $9:00each from Art shops (You can pre-cut the sheets into quarters for ease of transportation or buy a pad of A3 size.) Do not buy paper of the following brands: Eraldo di Paolo, Canson Montval, Montmarte or Art Spectrum
Paints:
Cotmans watercolours tubes are fine (and also the cheapest at about $7 each) Winsor and Newton, Art Spectrum, Schminke and MaimeriBlu are also fine, however if you are using Art Spectrum buy Australian Red Gold instead of Raw Sienna)
Yellows - Raw Sienna
- Gamboge
Blues - Cerulean
- French Ultramarine
- Cobalt
Reds - Permanent Rose
- Alizarin Crimson
Dark - Burnt Sienna or Burnt Umber
Optional: Viridian, Light Red or Cadmium Red, Mauve, Chinese white or White Goauche If you have other colours bring them along too.
(Do not buy cheap paints, e.g. where you get a whole set of 12 colours for only $15, it is better to spend your $15 on some of the above and add to later)
Brushes :
Please buy soft haired watercolour brushes (like Taklon, nylon, sable or similar.) Do not use hard bristled oil/acrylic brushes, although having one is handy for scrubbing and lifting)
One large brush (e.g. a Hake or Chinese Wash Brush)
Minimum of One medium round (e.g. size 6, 8 or 10 with good points- more if you want)
One flat brush (e.g. ¾ inch or 1 inch)
One small brush for detail (e.g. a rigger or liner brush)
If you have more brushes certainly bring them as well.
Other:
- 1 roll normal masking tape, to tape paper to a board. (we won’t be stretching paper)
- 2 Waterproof boards, about A3 size (e.g. Gatorboard, Foamcore, Perspex, MDF or Fluteboard, which is an excellent lightweight board that you can get from Bunnings)
- 2 Pencils (HB or 2B)
- normal rubber/eraser
- normal black or blue pen for taking notes
- Sketch book/notebook
- ruler
- folder for keeping handouts and work in
- Waterproof ink pen (Mitsubishi Uniball waterproof/fadeproof pen in fine, black is great…can usually get from a newsagent or artshop $5)
- Masking fluid (or share a bottle with a friend)
- Box of Tissues (or less elegantly…2 rolls of toilet paper will suffice)
- 1 or 2 Water containers (clean empty yoghurt containers are great)
- Household dish sponge (to wipe your brush on)
- 1 or 2 Old towels (or old sheet, to protect workspace)
- Palette or white plastic trays or ice cube trays. (You must have some areas to squeeze out paint and separate areas for mixing paint.)
- Water spray bottle (empty little pump salad dressing or hair conditioner bottles are great)
- Bring along some of your photos or reference material that you would like to paint so that we can work on your design skills.
Optional but not essential (only bring if you already have):
Make up sponge or sea sponge
Old toothbrush
Hair dryers are not required. If you do bring one it must be tag tested by a qualified electrician.
Table easels are not required but if you have one and usually use it, certainly bring it along.
Coffee mug – tea, coffee, milk and sugar are not supplied by the School. Classes pool funds to buy supplies for the week which can be stored in the Tea Room provided. Please note that students are responsible for keeping their allocated tea room clean and tidy.
IMPORTANT: All electrical equipment required for your class at USQ must be ‘tag-tested’ by a qualified electrician prior to arrival in order to comply with safety rules. Eg: extension cords and hair dryers etc.

HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES AND MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS
If you bring any hazardous substance to the McGregor School, could you please ensure that you obtain a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) from the supplier or obtain one from the manufacturer of this substance.
To do this, either ask the supplier from whom you purchase the hazardous substance, or read the contact details on the hazardous substance and contact the manufacturer and ask for a MSDS). Once you have obtained the MSDS, bring it with you to the school, and hand in a copy to the McGregor School office and or the Tutor.
Hazardous substance can be: e.g. solvents, acids, some paint and glues, chemicals, fixatives, fluxes and solders.
If you are unsure, the Supplier and or manufacturer should be able to inform you if the substance is classed as hazardous.
