Passage of Light with Pastel
Students' Materials List
Tutor: Grace Paleg
Materials to be supplied by the student
Board: with a few sheets of butchers paper to back the pastel paper
Pastel Paper: full size - Grace uses Canson paper. A mid tone is preferable. I most often use Lavender Blue (no 150) .The interesting thing about pastel is that your individual choice of paper will bring very different results to your work.
Pastels: all and any that you have. An important aspect of my pastel work is to use powerful darks. For this I have found Art Spectrum Flinders Blue Violet 520 D And Flinders Red Violet 517 D excellent.
I use a lot of Schmincke Pastels. If you don't have any I recommend you try at least these three colours 044D permanent Red 3 Deep.
042D permanent red 1 pale (really a great orange) and
004D Permanent Yellow 3 Deep.
Pastel pencils: Dark grey and a cream for initial drawing. Schwann Carb Othello Pencils (nos770 and 681) If you are considering buying a set of pastel pencils I would recommend Carb Othello.
STILL LIFE REQUIREMENTS
Each artist should bring his or her own still life set up, at least three objects. They can be anything as long as they are what you love. Some people are happy to share but I feel this always comes with a compromise. I want each person to be in control of there own image and this comes through choice of subject and placement. A backdrop is a good idea. A piece of simple cloth set on a cardboard stand (two sides of a cardboard box) can simplify your subject.
PORTRAITURE REQUIREMENTS
Pastels
Mid tone pastel paper. There are some great midtone paper colours for portraits. I use a grey green called Gris Ciel no 354 and a darker one called gris chine no. 431. Once again your own input into colour choice will make dramatic differences to your finished painting.
As well as using pastel I use quite a lot of Carb Othello pastel pencil. I find these colours handy.
620, 642, 330, 675, 681.
Conte pastel pencils are great if you can get them in 48, 49, & 36
