TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
Round nose pliers
Flat snipe nose (pointy) pliers
AA tweezers (Stainless steel ones that come to a fine neat point; clean and not covered in solder and flux!!)
Jewellers saw and blades.
Files for metal – needle and/or larger flat or half round
Wooden bench pin and clamp for sawing
EZILAP diamond file (I like the medium grade best – find in Bunnings or sometimes in knife/kitchen shops), or diamond files.
400, 600, and 800 Wet & Dry paper

MISCELLANEOUS
Paintbrush- 1 x size 0 and 1 x size 000 (we need the synthetic sable ones, ones that are fairly short in the brush section. Real sable is too soft for our use. We are using our brush as a spatula tool, not as a painting implement). Please get new brushes. Fluffy old ones won’t do!
Small scissors – like nail scissors
Small glass jar
Small plastic jars or a couple of those clear stackable screw together containers (enough for washing your selection of colours)
Tissues (non-oily or scented)
Plastic ice-cream tub
Old bath towel
Pencils, pens, tracing paper, drawing paper
Note book

Spectacles. This sort of fine work can be hard on the eyes so please test out what sort of glasses you will need i.e. your reading glasses focal length is often too long for our needs. We tend to work with our eyes about 30 to 40cms from our work. For example, I find the cheap magnifier spectacles from a chemist and many other places, are fine – just try them out to find the strength that suits you for this closer, detailed work. There are a variety of magnifying devices available.

Coffee mug, tea, coffee, milk and sugar are not supplied by the School. Classes pool funds
to purchase supplies for the week which can be stored in the Tea Room provided. Please note
that students are responsible for keeping their allocated tea room clean and tidy.

ENAMELS
We will use the Japanese lead bearing enamels. The colours that work best for this workshop are colours of mid to pale tones, which allow us to see all that beautiful texture. Old and unlabelled colours you may have inherited can often prove dirty or cloudy and are very unreliable, so to get the best out of this technique, please use the Japanese colours; they are superb! (note:Thompson enamels are unleaded colours).

* Please look at my website to see some examples of the type of work we can do. Go to www.brymfull-design-studio.com then go to Classes, then to Studio news.

I suggest you could use 2 or 3 Opaque colours and 4 or 5 transparent colours. Make sure you get some of the S302 Clear White as well which is used for the base as well as possible top layers on your pieces. Below I have listed a selection of colours that work well for this workshop. (You may have a selection of the Japanese colours already, so might need to only add a couple of new colours).

To shade or blend colours, use combinations like Pearl Aqua & Cerulean Blue Mid, and Pearl Green to Malachite Green, or Pearl Yellow to May Green, and Pearl Aqua blends nicely to Cool Grey Mid and so on.

After looking at my website examples, have a play with some designs and think about their possible colour schemes and choose colours accordingly.
