Getting résumés right

Perspective employers were unlikely to be impressed with résumés listing raunchy email addresses such as sexy-monkey, a university student ambassador has told a group of high school students.

USQ Fraser Coast business student Elle Green is currently presenting résumé writing workshops to Year 12 students from Maryborough and Hervey Bay high schools.

About 150 Maryborough High students have completed the workshop, while 120 students from Hervey Bay High are currently undertaking the workshops at the USQ Fraser Coast .

Elle, 19, said résumé writing was a vital skill for students as they prepared to head out into the workforce or go to university.

'On average employers spend about 20 seconds looking at a résumé,' she said.

'So it makes sense to make a good first impression. Use correct English and don’t make spelling mistakes because you can be sure your résumé will be weeded out if there’s anything wrong with it.

'Inappropriate email addresses as a contact point are not usually suitable for a professional approach.

'It’s also important to remember that employers can gather information about applicants by looking at social media sites such as Facebook pages, so consider the implications of what is out there in the public arena.

'Most importantly, résumés are used as a selling tool to sell yourself.

Employers look at things like work history and personal qualities. If you don’t have a work history, then include anything that will show you would make a valuable contribution to the team. Include things like sporting team membership, which shows teamwork and leadership skills.'

USQ Fraser Coast provides the free workshops as a service to the school community.

Maryborough High student Ebony Ackland said the workshop she attended had been extremely helpful.

'The information was very useful and it’s helped ease the worry of going for a job interview,' she said.

'I’m going to be looking for a job in the hospitality industry when school finishes next month.'
