Vice-Chancellor speaks up against violence against women

USQ Vice-Chancellor Bill Lovegrove called upon the Toowoomba community to take a stand against violence against women during White Ribbon Day last Friday.

Professor Lovegrove officially took up the CEO Challenge this year to raise awareness and support a violence-free community and his efforts were strengthened with Friday’s signing of a partnership agreement between USQ and Relationships Australia.

'My role (with the CEO’s Challenge) has been an interesting one,' Professor Lovegrove said.

'Australia is a terrific country but there are some things that just shouldn’t happen in a country like ours.

'That’s why I’m committed to eliminating violence against women— you don’t need to be an expert or academic, you just have to care.

'If we all do a little bit, it all helps.'

Professor Lovegrove said about 827 domestic violence incidents are reported each year in Toowoomba alone, while many more go unreported.

'We want to utilise the strengths this University has and we will be setting up a steering committee to help support the elimination of domestic violence,' Professor Lovegrove said.

CEO of Relationships Australia Shane Klintworth said the organisation could always do with more support and appreciated Professor Lovegrove and USQ getting behind a worthy cause.

'We’d love for more organisations like USQ to provide assistance in helping domestic violence victims,' Mr Klintworth said.

'As well as raising awareness and funds, they’re also helping us with research and evolving our men’s programs.'
