Original postcard-size artworks will be on-show in the University of Southern Queensland’s Arts Gallery this month.
The inaugural ‘Having A Great Time, Wish You Were Here’ exhibition will feature postcards, created in a variety of media, by secondary school Art teachers and invited USQ Alumni.
Exhibition curator, Alexis Tacey said ‘we have invited teachers working in southern Queensland to submit up to five ‘postcard’ size works of art.’
Postcards will be sent through the mail to the USQ Arts Gallery, from as far away as Roma and Goodiwindi as well as the local region.
‘The most exciting part of the process will be actually receiving the works on the day before the exhibition opens; until then, we won’t know who will deliver work or the nature of their art.
‘We have received an exciting response to our initial call for submissions and are expecting a wonderful assortment of works.
‘Some of the postcards will be humorous, some serious and others we are not too sure about.’
A lover of the tradition of postcards and postcard art, Ms Tacey said her introduction to postcards was as a young girl.
‘The first postcard I ever sent was in the 1960s from the Gold Coast to my aunt in Sydney and since then I have kept every postcard I ever received.
‘Postcards are part of our holiday experience; they are a reminder of where we have been or where our family and friends have been and a way of staying in touch by writing a brief note on the back.
‘But more importantly, it is the photo on the front of the postcard which conveys the biggest message; it raises many questions, such as ‘will the recipient appreciate the cheekiness, the humour, the location attached to the image’ or ‘will the recipient appreciate the fact that you are on holidays and they aren’t’ or ‘is the postcard special enough to be added to a collection’.’
The exhibition will be officially opened on Tuesday 14 February at 5pm and will continue until 8 March in the USQ Art Gallery.
The Gallery is open from 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday and admission is free of charge.
