Harmony Day 2012 brings cultures and community together

Harmony Day 2012 was a bright and vibrant occasion.

The University of Southern Queensland’s Harmony Day for 2012 was once again a success, as more than 400 people celebrated the cultural diversity of the Toowoomba community.

The annual event is a Commonwealth Government initiative and provides the community with fun activities, exposure to other cultures and an opportunity to think about the region and university’s success as a multicultural society.

Manager of the USQ Multicultural Centre and Harmony Day organiser William Conwell said he had received nothing but positive feedback from the Wednesday celebrations.

‘There was a great mix of USQ staff, students and members of the Toowoomba community,’ Mr Conwell said.

‘People seemed to really enjoy the performances, fashion show and of course, the food.

‘Everyone did a great job in helping out; even the weather was on our side.’

Mr Conwell said the day’s activities included the food stalls, music, cultural dances, a fashion parade featuring traditional garments from various countries, martial arts demonstrations, tennis, basketball, volleyball and the ‘Tug-of-Peace’.

‘The USQ quad was very much alive; there was action everywhere,” Mr Conwell said.

‘Even though organising the event was exhausting, it was well worth it.’

Mr Conwell said the annual Harmony Day celebrations were open for everyone to share in the festivities.

‘We can all be proud of our multiculturalism and internationalisation at USQ,” he said.

‘The day is about community participation, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

‘Harmony Day provides an opportunity for USQ students from various cultural backgrounds to come together and showcase their culture while making new friends.’
